frankoceanewsHe has written songs for Brandy, Justin Bieber and John Legend. 25-year-old Frank Ocean, described as a rhythm and blues musician, singer, songwriter and rap artist, is known best in the Eastern Sierra for his run-ins with law enforcement around New Year’s.

The Mono County Sheriff had reported a couple of weeks ago that a deputy, with help from a Highway Patrol Officer, had stopped a black BMW for speeding near Tom’s Place on New Year’s Eve. The report said Frank Ocean was in that vehicle and was cited for possession of a small bag of marijuana. He was cited and released with a report going to the District Attorney.

News later got out in the New York Daily News that Ocean was also pulled over by the CHP on December 30th as he drove north near Keough’s on Highway 395. The Daily News story said a CHP officer gave Ocean a verbal warning about his speed and cited him for driving with a suspended driver’s license and having tinted front windows. That same story reported that a passenger drove the vehicle away.

According to the internet, Ocean had lived in New Orleans and was influenced by the local jazz scene. After Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, Ocean moved to Los Angeles. He was awarded album of the year by 2012 Soul Train Music Awards for his album, Channel Orange. Ocean made headlines last year when he announced his “same-sex attraction.” Reports said he became one of the first major African-American artists to announce his homosexuality.

There are a lot of people in the Sierra (not all, but enough) who espouse to such things as Amending the 2nd amendment to outlaw machine guns for civilians. And like those who had a problem with owning other human beings (because it was okay according to the Constitution) 13th Amendment, they believe the Constitution should not be touched so they can own machine guns.
There is some racism in there somewhere.

And here the news had it all wrong, reporting that he was pulled over for speeding. With overly tinted windows (which makes one wonder how the cops saw into the car to know he was black before they cited him, but you know better).

But on a positive, I had no idea this guy wrote Brandy. One of the classics, “wears a braided chain made of finest silver from the north of Spain, a locket that bears the name of the man that Brandy loves.” Was considered quite “rad” a few years ago, kid hardly seems old enough to have written it. Here’s the link for any hip cat that wants to check it out. Glad the youngsters still “groove” to the old school rock and roll:

It seems to me, a person’s political leanings might be influenced by the way that person views their god.

There is the angry, scowling Old Testament god who floods the entire world and throws people into everlasting hellfire for their transgressions (because he “loves” them) – and then there is the gentle, smiling New Testament god who creates people the same: black/white, rich/poor, gay/straight and forgives them their trespasses.

Which god do you think would authorize the nuking of women and children in Nagasaki, and which god would would abhor the ownership of their fellow human beings, preemptive war, and racial prejudice?

Try to relax and accept people for what they are. Take that leap and jump into the water. The water is fine.

@Big AL, I wasn’t sure who you referred to as Dr. facts so I jumped the gun. I understand it’s not about intimidation, that came up after I was wrong to jump the gun so if we can disregard that I will clarify my frustrations and concerns. Whether it be gun control, climate change or any other issue that the corporate media has been successful at divided the country on.
You say how is it going to end if everyone keeps bagging on everyone, but how are we as a nation going to address all these big problems we currently face and the generations after us face when OUR government (Democrats and Republicans collectively) keep subsidizing the problems but don’t subsidize the solutions!!! And I don’t know if you remember back before we had this election I was big on saying Money does not = freedom of speech and corporations are not people, I mean that because if any one of us really feels the importance to get our democracy back we need to get money out of politics.
So I get frustrated when I hear people using the talking points that are delivered from the mainstream media in effort to keep us divided and I myself is guilty at it a time or two but it is the legal corruption and the negative influence of money is the biggest task to getting OUR democracy back to the people.
As long as money is the main factor and not democracy and votes we will never win on any issue.
          Get Money Out of Politics!
Money is not Freedom of speech!

Jeremiah, In a democracy money talks and bull walks, in a true sense of a democracy, it is the majority rules after we have voted on it. But the world has made it the former example.

As I have said this isn’t a democracy, other than our elections, it has grown into a democracy. If the constitution of this republic was upheld in all cases, then we would not have people suffering as they have and continue to suffer, but in a democracy, the majority over rules the minority, you just have to get everyone to believe you and get on your side, then you can do what ever you want.

            Does that sound familiar?

Yes the main stream media is the corporate media. It gets everyone to believe it.

The control is coming from the money, the BIG money, some call it evil, and I agree … but just the same it is money (greed) that drives everything, and you’re right, until we control the greed, it will always seek to subjugate everyone and everything under it’s thumb.

You look at all of the promises and statements made by the current administration and the rest of the govt. Look how many have been broken or changed direction.

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

The 2nd Amendment was an eminently reasonable doctrine in the frontier society of the 1790s when a gun was a basic tool of existence and state militias were self armed. Those days are long past.
There is an element in our society that resists any restrictions on gun ownership and even goes so far as to opine that the real reason for the 2nd Amendment is to provide means to overthrow our elected government. That theory is clearly wrong. A clear reading of the amendment shows that the purpose was to support the militias, today’s National Guard.
We are a nation of laws. To make changes in the government, we have elections. To take up arms against the government is treason.

You can say what you want to say Treasonous .. but you’re wrong, what you stated in your first paragraph is the truth, and what stood then stands now. And BTW That is not treasonous words. It is righteous words to live free by.

Today’s national guard is part of the professional army. What the second amendment is saying, is for citizens, not professional soldiers, to keep and bare arms, as a last defense in the case of a foreign army invading. To bolster the regular army (Professional army) in such times it is needed. And to protect the citizens from a tyrannical government that is bent on subjugating the citizens to their rule.

Nothing has changed in 237 years. You can say there is also an element in this country that will subjugates us all under a one world order, which ever you choose, you are right.

This country is not a democracy it is a republic, just listen next time you hear the pledge of allegiance recited. In a Democracy, the majority can over rule the minority, that means they can over rule even one citizen. But under the constitution of this republic even one citizen is protected in his or her’s rights as outlined in the constitution.

        • Too many Americans dying January 18, 2013 at 7:59 am #

Today, roughly four people out of 100,000 Americans are gun-homicide victims in the United States every year, but even more, roughly 10 in 100,000, die from guns from all causes, when including accidents and suicides. These rates are 20 times that of other advanced nations and similar to rates in some of the most lawless places on earth.

We lose more Americans to gun violence in one month than we have lost in Afghanistan or lost on D-Day, more in two years than in Vietnam. There is a direct correlation between gun deaths and the number of guns in a society.
There are many things that might be done to reduce gun violence. Most people think that banning assault-type weapons, making background checks mandatory for all gun sales, banning sales to felons and the mentally unstable and making gun trafficking a federal offense are reasonable ideas.
The opponents of these reasonable measures cite the 2nd Amendment.

While the Supreme Court has affirmed the right to possess firearms in the home for self defense, it has also stated that the right is not unlimited, thus these measures are surely constitutional. If the opponents of reasonable gun laws continue to resist these changes, they may encourage the rest of the population to do, what up to now has been unthinkable, repeal the 2nd Amendment.

Doesn’t the second amendment say my right to bare arms shall not be infringed upon? I would say placing restrictions on my rights is a infringment of my rights. Just because they have placed restrictions on my rights already, doesn’t make it right or legal. If anybody changes how this law is enforced it will end up being the Supreme Court.

But that was the main reason for the second amendment back then was to have a well regulated militia in each one of those colonies to protect against the red coats and those considered tyrants back then. And to touch on what Treasonous talk stated that we have a well regulated militia that being the National Guard, Army, etc. So really I believe folks need to stop misinterpreting the second amendment and thinking it is a right for anyone and all to stock pile weapons in the name of fighting government tyranny, the gun manufactures love that argument. But at the same time say there is a natural disaster and government is really the only source that can help you and your family, then what? Would seceding from the union really work for any of the states besides Texas, they are one of the few that don’t take in more Gov’t funds then they put out.

No, the national guard is part of the regular (professional) army. And the second amendment has nothing to do with stock piling weapons in as much as it guarantee people the right to defend themselves, you can interpret it however you like, like the bible, you can say it is what you want it to be, but the truth remains the same.

The president passed a law recently that limits free speech, it basically says people can not protest something, if a member of the govt. who is appearing in public either in close proximity, or somewhere in the general vicinity. How does that work?

So now, if someone doesn’t like what you’re saying they can arrest you, if you don’t like what others are saying who are allowed by the same officials, you can not protest it either. hmmmm

Just one more way for them to violate your rights.

And no the playing field is not level .. I don’t think you understood what I said about both. Under a true republic money shouldn’t matter, in a democracy, it is everything. It drives everything.

Yes some are overly angry as in any issue, you have those that seem to blow it out their rear. But basically, you have some who are passionate about freedom, some can not express it in a right way, some try to express it rightfully. This goes for both sides of all issues we face.

I understand your last comment but frankly it is pretty offensive in that people see those who are passionate about their freedom in such a way. While it might not be meant for all .. it seems to point to all.

Some people just don’t get why some are passionate about it, I would say Jeremiah, you would understand it, you speak out about things you see that are wrong with the same direction that gun owners speak out for.

What gets me, is how people think he is some sort of a savior, he is only a figure head for the money. He sure painted a good picture, and people were hungry for a change, and he told them he was bringing it.

How is that change working for us now.

It could be .. impeachment is on the horizon, I have heard, but I think he might just slip put of that.

Jeremiah, the media is being used, and in some cases, is part of the deception, it just that there seems to be not enough who see the deception. And I don’t feel some like Rush Limbaugh are making anything right, they seem to be part of the problem as well, blowing it out of their rear.

That simply is not true, if you’re going to quote facts, quote them truthfully …

Since the Federal Assault Weapons Ban expired in September 2004, murder and overall violent-crime rates have fallen. In 2003, the last full year before the law expired, the U.S. murder rate was 5.7 per 100,000 people, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Report. By 2011, the murder rate fell to 4.7 per 100,000 people. One should also bear in mind that just 2.6% of all murders are committed using any type of rifle.

FAIRFAX, VA—In the wake of the horrific school shooting that killed so children representatives from the National Rifle Association asked all Americans to please try, in this moment of sadness and grief, to remember the myriad great and indispensable things that guns do for us every day. “While the events of last night are truly tragic, I sincerely hope that no one at any point forgets how truly terrific guns are, and how they enrich all of our lives on a regular basis,” said NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre, adding that the nation’s citizens must open up their hearts in this time of mourning and realize how simply unlivable a life without gun ownership would be. “From hunting, to protecting one’s home from prowlers, to target practice, why, there is practically no end to the ways in which guns are constantly improving our lives every moment of every day. As awful as this shooting was, none of us should ever forget that.” LaPierre then closed his remarks with a direct plea to the people, asking them to try and imagine where they would be today without the citizen’s right to bear arms

            I am moving on. .
It doesn’t matter if we are talking about gay rights, climate change, or ways to interpret the 2nd amendment. The fact is Allen it doesn’t matter until we get money out of politics, WE THE PEOPLE will never win on any issue when their is money incentives from big donors to go with their best interest. And if voters were looking in for the facts rather then eat up what mainstream media feeds them then maybe we would have had prop 38 pass rather then everybody believe the propaganda that was thrown our way, and it is on the news today about fake foods, to bad a majority voted no on a measure 90 percent of the Country agrees on (labeling if a food is genetically modified or not), but of course people believed the lame 30 second adds enough to not do any research on the matter. And that is a problem Allen, Voters don’t take the time to look up whats going on so they let a 30 second add dictate how we feel about our politics.
So if people keep bashing each lame party that doesn’t represent the rest of the 98% of the american population, and keep acting like each party is better then the other when really they both feed into this tainted Republic/Democracy.
And yes you mentioned reason of how our rights are being taken away, kinda like the fact in the Defense Authorization act american citizens can be detained indefinitely which is a violation of the constitution so where is the outrage on that?? if people woke up and realize what is going on in DC they wouldn’t continue to only vote for a single party.
I don’t care how much people blame this administration when the other party’s candidate stated time after time that corporations are people and if people don’t know the effects of that THEY SHOULDN’T VOTE.
So we can go back and forth for days but until the american people agree to get money out of politics and support bills like Campaign Finance Reform, and constitutional amendments to get money out of politics then we are wasting or energy debating different view points.

And where does it say no one is gonna be allowed to have weapons??? HUH??
Get real people the only tyranny that is going on is the tyranny that high capacity magazines and the wrong person with a gun creates. That is the tyranny that we face on a day to day basis.
It doesn’t mean take all guns away cause that is impossible (guns don’t biodegrade) But why can’t we have some legislation from logic rather then blow it out of proportion and think 1776 needs to rise again.
And all of you that sit on your cloud of judgement putting liberals and left thinkers in a category that only reflects the small mindedness of yourself, and then you think you are immune to being part of the problem. .

And just because it is in YOUR and I don’t go by YOUR bible. Why should anyone have to answer to anything that is in YOUR bible if they don’t believe it?????

When Chip mentions the word “liberal” this is clearly part of a political agenda as liberal, left-leaning, do-gooder liberal, etc. are code terms and name-calling ploys for Democrat.
As the President of the United States brilliantly mentioned in his inauguration address to us American citizens yesterday, it’s not a good idea to confuse name-calling with factual and civil rhetoric as it contributes to the division in America. He also mentioned the constitutional rights of gay people comparing these rights the same as rights for women and blacks, and the call to find peaceful solutions in lieu of perpetual war (preemptive wars, etc.).
These truly are wonderfully progressive times with extremists in our midst being exposed for what they are daily.

Especially when those policies are responsible for creating and promoting a non productive/dependent class?[Romneys 47% comment] Policies that have wasted 100s of BILLIONS of dollars on failed government programs/subsidies. Been to S Central LA lately?.I doubt it……the place has not improved since I lived there during the Watts riots….yet the fools that live there keep re-electing the same ‘progressive’ politicians that are keeping them down, keeping them from ‘pregressing’.Overall the progressive agenda has been a proven failure…over and over…..and im hardly a conservative. No Chip Chipperson the progressive agenda is not a failure when your the one trying to pick yourself up.
The progressive agenda did not create the non productive / dependent class, so you agree with the right wing when you hear them call Obama the welfare president but it was BUSH who made welfare a debit card and lowered the qualification back in 04. Once he made it a debit card it became way more desirable.
It is not the progressive agenda that is keeping the people down, It is the tainted system where not everybody plays by the same rules and if you follow the trail of money you will find the biggest takers and tax user’s are the profitable companies with a ridiculous amount of subsidies.
If you know how we got in this mess, bad derivatives, banks using money they didn’t have, bad CDO’s, and of course de-regulation of wall street and the banks, Bush tax cuts and the fact the average worker has been getting the shaft ever since the supreme court ruled Money=freedom of speech, corporations=people the shift of wealth slowly went to the top percent, it went to the top because productivity kept rising but the compensation for productivity went in other areas.
Yeah you want to talk about failed subsidies? but you talk about the services that are meant to help and not the ones going to profitable industry’s.
The progressive agenda is the only hope we have when you are aware the democrats and republicans both take in money from big donors and both feed into the lobbying and legal bribery we call a Republic/Democracy. And why does anybody want to conserve that?

Id rather see subsidies go to companies that hire 1oooo’s of people and provide health care plans than give it to the non-productive…………WE CANNOT AFFORD THESE PROGRAMS ANYMORE.Like I said the progressive ideals were a nice thought and some nice symbolism, but no substance. There is something called reality. Since when is it a right wing thing to want to be financially successful? i thought that’s an American thing……perhaps a visit back to school and take econ 101 and pay attention this time.

He sure gives wonderful speeches doesn’t he? And that’s about all he does that is remotely wonderful. It’s just words and everyone gets caught up in the pretty words, in the pretty speeches and forgets that he is not a leader…but he sure does sound great…..Oh brother….another four years of amazing……speeches.

  9. Film review January 17, 2013 at 12:25 pm #

    and speaking of race …
The much-honored film “Lincoln” was recently shown in the White House.
For those who may have forgotten, this is a film (and an excellent one at that) that showed how difficult it was to get the 13th Amendment passed during a period in American history where brother was killing brother over the “right” to own slaves.
Director Steven Spielberg, actors Daniel Day Lewis, Sally Fields, and Tommy Lee Jones were present and congressmen from both parties were invited. Not one member from the Republican party opted to attend the film’s viewing.
Racism is alive in America. A band of young men in Mississippi regularly cruises for negroes to beat up. Another white kid in Mississippi deliberately ran over and killed a black man with no charges pressed against him.
When the first black president was elected, there was much joy and celebration.
There was also a feeling that America is doomed.
I say, let there be dancing in the streets!

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 8 Thumb down 6

      Chippie –
You might be better served to study the 13th Amendment.
Then please get back with your proof that the amendment is not about freeing black people.
Same with the Emancipation Proclamation. I believe you will find it TOO is about freeing black people.

Here something to chew on Chippie:

The US Census declared that in 2010 15.1% of the general population lived in poverty:
9.9% of all non-Hispanic white persons
        12.1% of all Asian persons
26.6% of all Hispanic persons (of any race)
        27.4% of all black persons.

In a very real way, people of color STILL remain in bondage.
        This is unnacceptable.

Still in bondage? Did you watch the inauguration? There are many reasons for those stats, but that isn’t one of them.

Dr. Facts, brother man .. what’s your game runnin on bout racism? Jive ass, need to give it a rest blood! I think man you got foam on the brain brothah!

See, I can talk jive too like Mr. Cleaver. I grew up in East Palo Alto bro, back then it was predominately black, I was the one jive ass honkey in my class all through school until high school, when they started busing in the white kids, and busing out the black kids. They wouldn’t let me bus out if I wanted too LOL.

But it was my hood, I didn’t want to go to some other jive ass school in the district, I stayed their and ran with my homies .. although before homie came on the scene .. it was brothas!

I don’t share your need to be a brother, I already am. I call people my bother or sister no matter what they look like.

Yeah it’s cool we got a black prez in there, kinda difrent huh? But he aint no special thang .. He is just a man, he aint my homie either, I don’t respect his butt.

I know some people who being black .. would tell you just that too, I know some thing he is a prince on a white horse, and that’s cool. It all depends on why you voted for him, whether you feel he would bring some change, or if you wanted a black president above all.

So bro . I’m already outside the box, so is Trouble and a lot of other people, nice of you to label though.

With all due respects Chip Chipperson, you may be giving a tad too much credit (or blame) to elected officials.
I believe race relations in America is more of a societal thing. It depends on the way a person is raised how they view our black brothers and sisters. I.e. people raised in say, Michigan, view blacks vastly different from people raised in Texas or Mississippi.
You still see Confederate flags flying that commemorate the Civil War era where black people were bought and sold like property. Let’s hope their war cry “The South shall rise again” fades away … forever.

A thousand pardons for information that has much to do with politics when it comes to race and race relations (hard to avoid such things) but I find this extremely interesting and relevant:

“Although Republicans dominated the 2010 midterm elections with gains in the House and Senate, Democrats retained control of the White House and Senate, and bolstered their minority in the House just two years later. President Barack Obama won 332 Electoral College votes and, perhaps more alarming for the GOP, enjoyed support from more than 70 percent of Hispanic and more than 95 percent of black voters.”

Lisa, I think this blog is starting to resemble something from the Rush Limbaugh Show where the presentation of facts to counter or support a comment, is oddly demonized and combative comments are more acceptable.
But these are dark, dark days for half the population of America and comments that sound like fighting are in vogue for that unhappy part of our society.

Ohh she got ya Jerry hehe .. But I hear ya Lisa on the how much people are into fighting and drama and crap.

You look at the majority of the TV shows on, how much it reflects just what you’re saying. Everything from the cooking shows to Amish mafia. One show I see that does not have all of that crap is American Pickers, another is Duck Dynasty, both if not at all, have hardly anything bleeped out. Most of the rest of them can’t hardly get even one sentence out without having at least two words bleeped out.

It is this sort of junk that helps contribute to the terrible tragedies we face, almost monthly, somewhere in the country.
