Mammoth Police arrest robbery suspect

Stephen Brisby Andrews

Stephen Brisby Andrews, Jr.

On Saturday morning, February 2, at approximately 1 a.m., Mammoth Lakes Police Sergeants Eric Hugelman and Rick Moberly were meeting with Village Security personnel regarding a disturbance on Minaret when they observed another disturbance 50 yards away next to a trolley bus.  The sergeants and security officers ran to the trolley bus attempted to detain a suspect who was hitting the trolley.  He resisted and pepper spray was deployed to control the combative individual.

After controlling the suspect, Steven Brisby Andrews, Jr. Age 34 of Sherman Oaks, their investigation determined that he had committed a strong arm robbery while on the bus.  The victim, a 24 year old female resident of Mammoth Lakes, was sitting on the bus when the suspect entered and immediately grabbed a cloth bag she was holding and took it from her.  He then grabbed a purse that was strapped around her neck and dragged her off the bus.  It was at this point the sergeants and security officers observed the disturbance and responded.

The victim, while shaken up, was not injured.  Andrews was booked for robbery and resisting arrest at the Mono County Jail in Bridgeport.

Just prior to this incident, Mono County Dispatch received a call of a suspect fitting the description of Andrews who was assaulting people in the parking lot of Whiskey Creek.  He was last seen running towards the North Village.  It is believed that Andrews was the suspect who assaulted patrons of Whiskey Creek in the parking lot.

Sayno, excellent comment. This type of incident will bite MMM and the council in the butt someday, either because it will happen when there is no one working or when there are not enough cops working. It is too bad some citizen will suffer.

You should volunteer to help out when the local PD needs help.

Hey, Mammoth Lakes is a safe place. Why do we need so many police officers who earn so much money. Can’t we get volunteers to confront thugs? I’m sure some of the people on this blog would love to wrestle this guy down and drive him to Bridgeport for free.

But more importantly did he fly up to Mammoth? Because then we all know he would have spent $500 on food, booze, and lodging so it is all OK then. He is just misunderstood and was having a good time in Mammoth. Why did the police have to bother him? Now he won’t come back to Mammoth to snowboard.

This is scary stuff happening in Mammoth, not too smart reducing public safety. What if this was one of your family members, city council members?

I’m sorry, but how would additional cops stop this crime? He got caught, didn’t he? Doesn’t that prove we don’t need more police officers? Clearly the situation was taken care of

It is, Wayne. I’m in the Village 3 nights a week, dining, having drinks with friends, etc, and I’ve never once seen anything bad happen. Granted, I’m home before everyone gets drunk at Lakanuki, but this is the first incident I’ve heard of in a long time.

Yeah,I’ve got a female neighbor that used to live in June Lake, and on occasion used to visit Mammoth Lakes and the Village…untill she decided she didn’t want to be groped, and treated obnoxiously by a bunch of drunk guys everytime her and her friends would go there to do some shopping at the stores….no matter the time of day or night.
