“You’ve got to be a special person to live on the Eastside,” remarks Mammoth Town Planning Commissioner Elizabeth Tenney as she sits in her Mammoth Lakes living room. Elizabeth was the driving force behind the award winning Gateway Monument Project and is now bringing even more to the Eastside by creating the 2014 Eastside Know-How Series. She was inspired to do this by the TED five-minute lightning talks, “It’s amazing what you can get across in five minutes, but I figured on the Eastside we have so much to say we are going to do it in six.” Elizabeth sent out some emails to some very talented locals to see if they would be interested in doing something similar in Mammoth Lakes and after getting a great response she has set up three very informative evenings.
On January 14th, February 11th, and February 25th Rafters in Mammoth Lakes will be hosting the talks as part of their Tuesday Nights at Rafters Series. The evenings begin with appetizers and a no-host bar at 5:30pm and the talks begin at 6:15. Some of the things you will hear about in these six minute speeches include how to; capture sierra light with a camera (John Dittli), brew beer (Sean and Joyce Turner, Mammoth Brewing Co.), train at high elevation (Andrew and Deena Kastor), master three fundamentals of great skiing (Jack Copeland, former director of Mammoth Mountain Ski School), grow a trout (Tim Alpers), outsmart an avalanche (Neil Satterfield, Sierra Mountain Guides), plus a whole lot more.
This is an all volunteer event and admission is absolutely free. However, each evening they will be accepting donations for different charities. On January 14th they are taking donations for Disabled Sports of the Eastern Sierra. On February 11th donations will be accepted for Wild Iris and on the 25th all donations will go to the Mammoth Hospital Auxiliary. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will also be donated according to Brett Traux, The Sierra Nevada Resort’s General Manager.
These locals will share their talents, creativity, ingenuity, and resourcefulness. So come to Rafters and see what you can learn in six minutes.
