Joann Stanford
1934-2014

Joann Barbee Stanford, age 80, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014 at home in Bishop surrounded by family after a long illness. She was born in San Diego on July 16, 1934 to Richard and Helen Shanks, later followed by brothers, Richard and Robert.
Joann attended schools in San Diego, graduating from San Diego State University in 1957 with a BRN degree. She worked in hospitals in San Francisco and San Diego until 1966 when she met Robert Stanford and his four children. Robert and Joann were wed on Jan. 4, 1967, with Joann leaving nursing and joining Robert in operating Tamarack Lodge in Mammoth Lakes.

Together they added two more children to their family, Heather and Laurel. Subsequently the couple owned and operated Wildyrie Lodge and Crystal Crag Lodge along with Tamarack Lodge, all in Mammoth Lakes. Together they retired from the lodge business in 2003 with many happy memories and stories to tell.

During her married life, Joann enjoyed world travel, gardening, needlework and knitting, and serving in her church, which was St Timothy’s Anglican Church, for the past nine years. A wonderful hostess with a great sense of humor, Joann also ably hosted many gatherings of family and friends.

Joann is survived by her husband, Robert; six children, Christina Kallemeyn (Dennis), Gretchen Sippial (Charles), Heidi Leary (Kevin), Robert L. Stanford (Alison), Heather Weston and Laurel Manning (Michael); 15 grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Lynn Shanks; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins all of whom she loved so much.

A memorial service will be held for Joann at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5 at St. Timothy’s Anglican Church, 700 Hobson St., Bishop.

Because St. Timothy’s was such an important part of Joann’s life, the family asks any memorial donations would be made to St. Timothy’s Anglican Church.
