A low pressure system rammed through our region yesterday. What it lacked in moisture, it certainly made up for with the WIND. In many areas of Inyo and Mono County, gusts from 50 – 60 mph were felt. The Fort Independence Met Station reported at 1 pm yesterday, wind speeds of 45 mph G 67. A report into my office this morning said that the town of Keeler had gusts to 87 mph last night! Finally, according to NWS in Reno, Mammoth Mountain had estimated peak gusts of 170 – 180 mph. Today, the first day of December, a High Wind Warning is still in affect, with a slight chance of showers in Mono County. The strongest winds will be felt later this morning as the core of the 300 MB jet moves through the district. Today and tomorrow will see temps plummet to well below normal for both counties.

FOR THE OWENS VALLEY:

Today: Gradually clearing and very windy. Highs in the mid 40s and lows around 20. Winds NW 25 – 35 mph G 60.

Friday: Mostly sunny daytime and mostly clear in the evening. Highs around 50 and lows 19. Winds NW 10 – 20 mph G 35.

FOR THE TOWN OF MAMMOTH LAKES:

Today: Slight chance of scattered snow then clearing. Highs 23 and lows 13. Winds N 30 – 40 mph G 50.

Friday: Mostly sunny then mostly clear at night. Highs 30 and lows 12. Winds NE 10 – 20 mph G 35.

FOR MONO COUNTY:

Today: Mostly cloudy with scattered snow then becoming partly cloudy. Highs 24 – 29 and lows 7 – 12. Winds N 20 – 30 mph G 55.

Friday: Partly cloudy becoming mostly clear at night. Highs 30 – 35 and lows 3 – 13. Winds NW 10 – 20 mph G 35.

The system finally clears out of here late Saturday, leaving much reduced winds and very cool conditions through the rest of the weekend. And right now, dry and cool weather will remain through the mid part of next week, as a high amplitude ridge parks itself over the Eastern Pacific.
