(Press Release – MCSO) On the afternoon of Tuesday, June 25th, 2013, at approximately 4:30pm, Mono County Sheriff’s Dispatch received a 911 call for medical aid of a possible accidental shooting at the gun range in Bridgeport.
Mono County Sheriff’s Deputies, Mono County Paramedics, and Bridgeport Fire Department were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, it was determined that a father, age 57, and son, age 30, both out of county residents, were shooting at the range and had an accidental discharge of a rifle (.223). The bullet from the rifle struck victim one in his right leg. The bullet penetrated both legs and exited through the left foot. Victim two, who was standing next to victim one, sustained shrapnel injuries. Careflight was requested for both the victims. Antelope Valley Fire Department was put on standby at the Walker Ball Field for one of the two incoming Careflight’s. Victim one was flown from Bridgeport to Renown Medical Center in Reno for treatment of the gunshot wound and shrapnel injuries. Victim two was transported by Mono County Paramedics to the Walker Ball Field and then flown to Renown Medical Center in Reno for treatment of shrapnel injuries.
With unfortunate and accidental incidents such as this, it’s very important to remember basic firearm safety tips to ensure your own safety and the safety of those around you. Always treat all guns as if they are loaded, even if you think they are unloaded. Always keep the gun pointed in the safest possible direction. A “safe direction” is one where an accidental discharge of the gun will not cause any injury or damage. Always keep your finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot. Know your target, its surroundings and beyond. Be aware of all the people around you before you shoot. Know how to properly operate your gun. Remember, it is your personal responsibility to ensure your weapon is secure and safe. Use firearm safety devices on the gun, such as a trigger lock or cable lock. For more gun safety tips, please visit the California Department of Justice Firearms Bureau website at http://oag.ca.gov/firearms.

that will never make it
Thanks, I fully agree.
If I had VISUALLY checked the chamber like I should have, that bed would be alive today, but I didn’t…I was negligent. Maybe I should have said 99.9 % of accidental shootings are avoidable, preventable, and unintentional. OKIE DOKIE ?
hehe Right on Rick
So Rick; You purposely shot the bed? It wasn’t an accident? I get what you are saying about negligence, but, “There is no such thing as an accidental shooting” baffles me. By that reasoning, there is no such thing as a vehicle accident unless there was mechanical failure, right? BobK.
If you accept the reasoning used by the Naval Safety Center there really are no “accidents”. Mishaps all have understandable causes and preventions. I nearly every case a mishap does not occur due to one thing going wrong. There are a chain of events leading up to a mishap, usually… Read more »

How’d you know I have a 50 cal with a grenade launcher. It will also shoot signal flares which is pretty cool and we’re camping out in the desert.
Golly gee! Oh boy! Oh boy!
Owning a machine gun and pretending I’m a freedom-fighter keeping them pesky liberals in their place is more fun than sparklers and M-80s any day!
Is this a great country – or what?!!!
You’re so messed up Dr Facts.
And your well thought out, well-researched, and open-minded contribution to this subject, Big, Al is …?
Now, THAT is funny!
A person who refers to themselves as “Big” calling another person “messed up.”
You are too much, Big.

LOL brother …. where was I closed minded?
But you can’t play “Combat Action Figure” everyday for the ammo is so expensive nowadays. Cool gun though, I’m all for them being in the right hands, just not for carrying the NRA arguments. To each’s own, I get my rocks off with my Bear Archery Bows.
Sorry Island Boy, Grenade launchers are ILLEGAL as is a fully automatic machine gun. Didnt your mom ever tell you not to judge things you dont know about?Do a little homework please.
Here’s the deal Tom O and other God Bless America/machine-gun lovers:
It’s not the machine guns that frighten me – it’s the crazy people who insist on owning machine guns that frighten me.
tell me one person who owns a ‘machine gun’, because it is illegal to own a fully automatic weapon.
People do own “machine guns” fully automatic weapons … Whether or not it is illegal or not, some do have them. Not everyone who owns one is crazy, I do not have one, I don’t need one, I don’t really want one, but someone else might. I can do just… Read more »

Thanks for the underhanded insult. Is a Hitler reference next? Define an assault weapon, once again, fully automatic weapons are against the law…how about we go after the folks that own all them illegal guns you are so afraid of. Your post is nothing original.
Tell ya what Tom O. –
Define the word “liberal” for me, then I’ll take a stab at “assault weapon” for ya.
Also try turning off the talk radio and tune in to PBS for a spell.
Dr. I don’t get it .. why did the “L” word come into play? what does that do to help?
PBS is still on? And people listen to it? Wow.
To each his own. Some want to learn different things and find them on the Public Broadcasting Service – others get everything they need from a bloated bigots on talk-radio programs.
And I see Tom O did not try to define the word “liberal.”
Perhaps because definitions separate us further. Give it a rest. Many of us know Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck perform their radio and tv shows for the enormous money and maybe they believed some of their blather. Who knows. Beck makes $90 million a year. Don’t know about RL nor… Read more »

Don’t think for a minute people don’t own fully automatic weapons with 200 rounds clips that are also illegal.
Mark….All you mentioned there is indeed illegal to do…but that don’t mean society,or the governing laws in the Country should make it easier for those that choose to do it,or want to maybe get away with doing it.
Mark, that’s a hunting round for a lot of people. Just because it a powerful caliber or the gun looks scary doesn’t mean that it an ‘assult’ rifle….please define what an ‘assult rifle is.
It’s been my experience that anyone that uses the term “assault rifle”, are people that don’t believe in the 2nd ammendment. just sayin’.
Well in all fairness .. in retrospect, Rick, I think the comment might have been aimed (no pun intended) at pointing out absurdity of how people will try to jump on this story and try to decry gun rights. I hear ya, I get what you’re saying about gun accidents,… Read more »
