Independence’s traditional and Internationally Acclaimed Fruitcake Festival is postponed until 2017, and in it its place the town Is having a Community Yuletide Gathering, 6pm, Saturday December 10th at the American Legion Hall in beautiful and historic, downtown Independence.

Living up to its reputation as the Poltuck Capitol of Eastern California (maybe the world), the Independence Yuletide Gathering will feature a dessert potluck. Attendees are invited to bring a favorite dessert to share. Plates, napkins and plasticware are provided.

An Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest will be one of the evening’s highlights. Everyone is invited to wear their favorite (or not) ugly sweater to the event. Prizes will be awarded for several different categories.

Keeping the spirit of Fruitcake Festivals past alive, organizers will bring out the historic 11 year old archival fruitcake. Organizers wish to confirm of its continued sapidity and savoriness.

Amusing and entertaining stories of other’s Holiday disasters and catastrophes will be read…to help everyone feel better of their own loss…of having no Fruitcake Festival this year.
