The Mono County Sheriffs Department has confirmed earlier reports of a shooting in the Chalfant Valley area. Undersheriff Ralph Obenberger described the incident as an accidental shooting involving a juvenile.mono_sheriff

Obenberger said that on May 30th, an 11 year old Bishop boy was transported to Northern Inyo Hospital and deputies were called. The Undersheriff said that when a deputy contacted the boy and his father at the hospital, he determined that the juvenile did suffer a minor wound to his left index finger possibly from a handgun.

Further investigation revealed that the incident occurred while the boy was visiting a relatives house in the Chalfant area. Officers said the boy apparently found a .32 caliber Derringer at his fathers home, along with ammunition from an unknown location. Officers said that while at the relatives residence in Chalfant, the boy went into a nearby field where he discharged the handgun, causing his wound.

Deputies said that the boy stated he could not remember if he had dropped or thrown the handgun after the incident. Officers said law enforcement, search and rescue, Chalfant Fire and neighbors conducted a thorough search of the field where the incident took place. Some used metal detectors. They were unable to locate the handgun.
