Bishop Creek Trout Derby Wraps Up

fishing_opener_shot_2In an effort to lure a few more anglers to the Eastern Sierra this summer, the Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau recently organized the 3rd Annual Bishop Creek Canyon Summer Classic Trout Derby. The month-long contest ran from June 1st through June 30th. Chamber staff called the event a great success.

Specially tagged Alpers Trout were planted in Lake Sabrina, Intake II, Weir Pond and in Bishop Creek. Each tag corresponded to cash prizes between $30 and $300. Besides the tagged fish, all of the lakes and streams were heavily stocked with nice size Alpers Trout.

The Summer Classic Trout Derby represents a collaborative effort between the Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, local resorts, tackle shops, and the County of Inyo.

The total project cost is nearly $10,000 including purchase of the trout, cash prizes, plus advertising and some staff expense.

Tawni Thomson with the Bishop Chamber said, Were really quite pleased with the way it went, and noted that many of the Bishop Creek area businesses believe that the derby helped to stimulate travel to the region this summer.

A total of 357 people registered for the derby, ranging in age from 3 to 80 years old. The vast majority of the participants came from Southern California, joined by a few from out of state and some locals.
