The start of the "second season" for local 11-man high school football teams begins this week, with the Bishop Broncos and Mammoth Huskies set for league play.

Bishop will start the defense of its High Desert League title Friday night at John Schwab Field, hosting the undefeated Frazier Mountain Falcons on Homecoming Night.

Mammoth will be on the road again – after two straight home wins – traveling to Yermo (near Barstow) for the Desert Mountain League opener at Silver Valley High School.

The Broncos went 1-4 in the non-league portion of their schedule, losing the opener to Truckee, winning at Ontario Christian and then losing three straight to Dayton (Nev.), Rim of the World (Lake Arrowhead) and Mammoth.

The Broncos will have their hands full with the high-scoring Falcons from Lebeq. Frazier Mountain is 5-0 and ranked No. 3 in this week's East Valley poll. The Broncos have been unranked for the past two weeks, and it is believed to the first time Bishop has been out of the Top 10 since 2002.

Sierra Wave TV33 will have same-day coverage of the Bishop-Frazier Mountain game, starting at 11:30 p.m. Friday. We will have the entire Homecoming ceremony during our evening broadcasts (check the TV schedule for times).

Mammoth, meanwhile, is on a two-game winning streak after losing its first four games of the season. The Huskies had big losses against ranked teams in St. Margaret's (San Juan Capistrano), Whittier Christian and Faith Lutheran (Las Vegas) and then fell to Kern Valley (Lake Isabella).

But the Huskies came back with a huge 20-18 win against archrival Bishop, and followed that up with a 30-20 win over Mojave in the snow at Gault-McClure Stadium last Friday.

Silver Valley, long the doormat in the DML, has a new head coach and a 2-3 non-league record.
