Police say remain aware of your packages, purse and keys.

Even in the midst of holiday celebrating, safety should come first. The Bishop Police Department would like to remind the public of some holiday shopping safety tips.

Keep all valuable items close to you. Don’t put your purse or shopping bags down when you’re looking at other items on display. Thieves will take advantage of this short period of inattentiveness as a window to snag all your belongings. Never leave any of your belongings unattended.

Don’t leave packages. When you are shopping from store to store, please do not leave packages inside your vehicle in plain view. If at all possible, place in the trunk of your car. If you don’t have a trunk, make every attempt to conceal your packages. The best thing is to not leave all your packages inside a vehicle unattended for long periods of time. Go home, drop off and then return to more shopping. If packages are delivered to your house make sure to have someone take them for you, don’t leave packages unattended at your house. Or have packages delivered to your place of work, this is a secure area to deliver and leave packages.

There is safety in numbers. If possible, shop in a group or with another person. If you are shopping with a group of people, it’s more difficult and less likely for a robbery to occur.

Have your keys in hand. When you are walking to your car make sure you already have your keys handy. Walk with confidence and be very alert of anyone walking up on you. Once you get in your car, immediately lock the doors.

Trust your intuition. If you are getting a bad vibe from someone, trust your instinct. Be aware of anyone who might be following you or seems suspicious. Try to park as close to the store as you can and in a well lit area, if shopping at night. If you are particularly nervous, go to the security office and ask someone to escort you to your car.

Holiday Charity Scams.  The Holidays are a time of giving, but be aware of what charities are legitimate and the ones that are scams. Never give out your personal information over the phone; this includes account information for donations. Please, stick to well-known charities only and/or try to make donations in person.

We hope these holiday safety tips will help make your holidays a little safer and an enjoyable time for you and your family. The Bishop Police Department would like to wish everyone a very Happy Holiday season and a Happy New Year!
