With crime still a major concern for many, news from Bishop Police Chief Kathleen Sheehan created a cautious sigh of relief.

chief_sheehanSheehan recently reported to the Bishoop City Council that for the first three months of 2010, crime was down 63% over the same period last year. The types of crime that have dropped off are mainly the simple assaults, aggravated assaults, and thefts.

Sheehan believes that crime has dropped significantly in part due to proactive police work as officers take on the almost crimes. More people are calling the police when a large number of youth gather at a house or when there is a house party. Police then show up to see what is going on. The idea is to try to figure out where crime will occur, and put cops there, Sheehan said.

The police have also been working with local bars and restaurants to reduce trouble before it starts. The Chief believes that this is a significant factor in reducing crime in Bishop. Servers and bar tenders are being encouraged to take Alcohol and Beverage Control classes to learn what to look for and what the ramifications are when it comes to serving under age people and those that have had too much to drink.

Sheehan told the council that local businesses and bars are calling the police on their own patrons before trouble gets started.
