Friday morning, school children stretched a paper chain the length of Main Street Bishop to demonstrate the number of books they have read.

From Bar B-Q Bills on the south end of town to the Fair Grounds at the Wye, kids from Pine Street Elementary, Elm Street Elementary, Round Valley School, the Bishop Indian Education Center and preschools around the county, linked green and orange paper wrist bands together as part of a program called Read Across America.

Every time a student read a book, or had one read to them, the student wrote the name of the book on a wrist band. Each of these wrist bands then became a link in the chain, which the well read group of youngsters stretched the length of Bishop.

The students held their constantly squirming chain for a good 20 minutes or so as cars driving by honked their horns in support. All appeared to be having a good time.
