Museum’s 2014 Historic Calendar Features Women of Inyo County

The interesting and intriguing women who have endured and thrived in Inyo County are featured in the Eastern California Museum’s 2014 calendar.

The calendar shines a spotlight on a wide variety of women who have called Inyo County home from the pioneer days to the 1960s. For example, the calendar cover features a confident cowgirl and her horse, a young Paiute mother and child, and a fashionable woman sporting a fur hand muff, a long dress highlighted by lace, and quite a hat.

Other images in the calendar include: a mother and two daughters posing in a promotional photo for the Owens Valley Land Company (out of Los Angeles); a group of Paiute girls in an informal pose; a large group of Independence women in a formal pose during an early 1900s “garden party;” a row of “bathing beauties” posing on the edge of the Keeler swimming pool; a scattering formal portraits of well-dressed women of all ages; a group photo of the women on the hospital staff at the Manzanar War Relocation Center; and a snapshot of two rather stern ladies on a camping trip.

All of the photos are from the Museum’s extensive photo collection. The Museum’s two websites offer a sampling of more than 700 of the Museum’s photos at  HYPERLINK “http://www.inyocounty.us/ecmuseum” www.inyocounty.us/ecmuseum and  HYPERLINK “http://www.virtualtransportationmuseum.com” www.virtualtransportationmuseum.com.

The calendar is available at the Museum, 155 N. Grant St. in Independence, and costs $10 (to receive a calendar by mail, send a check for $14 to cover postage and tax to ECM, PO Box 206, Independence CA, 93526). The calendar is also available at the Bishop and Lone Pine chambers of commerce, Spellbinder Books and other museums and businesses in Inyo County.

The 2014 calendar was made possible by the ongoing support of the Eastern California Museum by the County of Inyo Board of Supervisors; a generous donation from the non-profit Friends of the Eastern California Museum ( HYPERLINK “http://www.fecm33.org” www.fecm33.org), and a special donation from Coso Operating Company – Terra-Gen Power, LLC, which operates the Coso Geothermal Plant, in Inyo County, and is one of the largest producers of renewable energy in the West ( HYPERLINK “http://www.terra-genpower.com” www.terra-genpower.com).
