Dr Gary Dankworth

Dr. Gary Dankworth, Carson City, Nevada

Inyo Sheriff officials have confirmed that a body was discovered in the Sierra above Big Pine on the Sequoia Kings Park side.  Inyo Search and Rescue had launched a search in that area on Sunday for an overdue hiker.

Reports had indicated that a body was found in the vicinity of the search for Dr. Gary Dankworth, 60 of Carson City.  Inyo Sheriff’s spokesmen said that they did not have a positive identification of the body and that Sequoia Kings Park officials believed the body was that of Dr. Dankworth but had not confirmed that news.

A statement from Carson Tahoe Health said that they were “saddened by the news of Dr. Dankworth’s death.  Spokesmen for Carson Tahoe Health said they did not know how the hospital knew of Dankworth’s death.  They did say that staff doctors had been in contact with the family.

According to Nevada news reports, Dankworth left friends who were camped Saturday at Finger Lake in the John Muir Wilderness.  He reportedly planned to climb the nearly 14,000-foot Norman Clyde peak.  Most call this a difficult climb in the Palisades area of the Sierra, including boulder fields, glaciers and steep drops.

Dankworth failed to return by Sunday morning and his friends hiked out to call for help.
