On Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at approximately 3:30 PM, the California Highway Patrol Bishop Communications Center received a call of an erratic driver traveling on northbound US-395, near Tom’s Place. An officer assigned to the Mammoth Lakes Resident post located the vehicle on School Road, east of US-395. The officer contacted the driver (Ms. Randia Rayle, age 25) and noted objective symptoms of alcohol intoxication. The officer conducted a driving under the influence (DUI) investigation. Ms. Rayle performed field sobriety tests and provided a breath sample. The preliminary alcohol screening device indicated Ms. Rayle’s blood alcohol content was approximately 0.26%, more than three times the legal limit. Ms. Rayle was arrested for DUI and subsequently booked into the Mono County Jail in Bridgeport, California. Ms. Rayle was issued a driver license suspension and her vehicle was towed from the scene.
Lieutenant R. D. Cohan, commander of the California Highway Patrol Bridgeport Area, said, “This late afternoon arrest demonstrates DUI is a 24 hour a day issue. The citizen who called in to report this driver probably saved a life. Please, if you see a drunk driver call 911.”
Extremely dangerous behavior. She was lucky that no one was killed. Often times one DUI mistake can be enough to ruin lives. Hopefully she can learn from this.
Attorney, I dispute your comment . You said “Often times”. I have heard the average drunk driver drives drunk over two thousand times in their life before they are ever sighted for DUI.
seems to be some alcohol abuse from these bloggers
TRY AGAIN TROUBLE! BEEN THROUGHT HE COURTS ALREADY AND UPHELD…. Generally, an anonymous telephone tip is not going to be sufficient to justify a detention, although it can be if there is a sufficient basis–such as predicting future behavior–for thinking the tip is worthy of belief. I agree with just about everything you said except about the police. They are professionals who are doing the job the society gives them to do as impartially as possible. Humans make mistakes and cannot be completely objective. If police and the legal system today do seem to protect business… Read more »
Ken, it isn’t all a grand plot. Some idiot was reeling drunk driving a motor vehicle on a public highway. Someone called the cops to report it like you might call the cops to report a burglar or an assault, the cops found the person driving drunk, witness their driving,… Read more »
I don’t understand your comment DT. I think the cops did the right thing. Why do you think that I think otherwise?
Drunk drivers scare me. Yet alcohol is legal and promoted in the media as being really cool. Same with tobacco. Some here have said that meth is the scourge of the Earth. It’s none of the substances that are at fault. It’s the people who use them. But there I… Read more »
“its the people who use them” Geez Ken, I’m one to think society shouldn’t be taken off the hook, especially when we realize the punitive approach to drug use isn’t working to deter future use or the production of, we know it’s a cultural norm to look down on drug… Read more »
Those are interesting stats Ken. I’d like to know how many of our teens died last year on legally prescribed drugs?
Thanks also to Officer Watson for taking time to reply to my rumblings! It’s good to hear all views on some issues.
Alcohol and tobacco are legal…
^ That’s CHIEF Watson.

Roy, I really don’t think it’s o.k. to drink and drive at any level, I personally don’t. But when our gov’t bodies abuse our civil rights and play on peoples fears, as these press releases clearly does, I will never stand by silent. For this police press release to say… Read more »
Trouble…If you truly feel it’s wrong to drink and drive, and don’t do it yourself, you should let it go and not defend those that do…what it does is offend people, especially those that have lost friends and family because of a DUI driver….and what it also does is make you look stupid… Read more »
Wayne, police can not pull people over because someone calls 911 and says you are drunk only . The cops are playing you if you believe that. They have to witness you breaking the law. If you are a fleeing felon it is a different story. Drunk driving is not… Read more »
The call is reasonable suspision if coupled with seeing the car failure to maintain a lane….
Trouble, you’re confusing probable cause to arrest with PC to make a stop. An officer cannot arrest someone solely because of a 911 call that a driver was erratic. The officer can use that call to make a stop of the vehicle to investigate further. The decision to make a… Read more »
“Wayne, police can not pull people over because someone calls 911 and says you are drunk only . The cops are playing you if you believe that.” Not true. This very topic is currently being argued in the “Navarette v. California” case. We will have a decision at some point… Read more »
Isn’t it amazing considering the years of efforts to educate people not to drink and drive that people still do? What does it take to get the message through these thick skulls? And this particular person wasn’t just a little buzzed. He would have been slurring his words like a… Read more »
