US 395 was closed for almost two hours Thursday evening after an accident that involved a parked California Highway Patrol vehicle.
Following is a press release from the CHP:
MONO COUNTY- On November 21, 2013, at approximately 1745 hours, a three vehicle collision occurred on southbound US-395, just north of Lower Rock Creek Road, in Mono County.
Bishop CHP Officer R. Hudachek (43), was in a black and white Ford Crown Victoria, parked directly in front of a disabled Toyota 4-Runner occupied by Mr. Colby Coats (Mammoth Lakes, 30). The Toyota was involved in a previous solo vehicle collision and was facing northbound on the southbound right shoulder of US-395. Officer Hudachek was sitting inside the patrol vehicle with the rear facing emergency lights activated in an effort to warn other drivers of the icy road conditions.
Lina Myers (Mammoth Lakes, 55) was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee southbound on
US-395, in the #1 lane, entering a curve in the roadway. Myers observed the patrol vehicle’s emergency lights ahead and attempted to slow down. The Jeep was traveling at approximately 45 mph when Myers lost control due to the icy road conditions. The Jeep continued out of control onto the right shoulder where it collided with the rear of the CHP patrol vehicle. The patrol vehicle was pushed forward into the Toyota.
As a result, Myers and Officer Hudachek were subsequently transported to Northern Inyo Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.
The move over law is for the whole state of California all highways you might want to research that online the guy that I know that got the ticket got the ticket in mono county on Sherwin grade
Then he should fight the ticket. Read the legislation, it clearly says freeway. A freeway means interchange on and off ramps. So t the stretch of road near the Crowley Lake interchange may qualify as freeway, but that’s it.
By the way the move over law has been in effect for more than a year now I know of a guy that got a 400$ ticket for not moving over or slowing down and I see a lot of drivers not doing so. like I sead be safe out… Read more »
While I have always practiced moving away from any vehicle on the side of the road, especially LEO and I continue to do so if clear, the ‘move over law’ does not apply to that stretch of road. It only applies to freeways, which that area is not. There are… Read more »
The deicer they use here is just like salt and they mix it in the cinders and sometimes use it strait . I’ve seen all kinds of road conditions with two million plus miles loged I know other states do things different than other states I’ve Seen it . With… Read more »
I hadn’t heard of the de-icer being used. What is it. The cinders work fine but they make a huge dust cloud that is also not healthy.
Tell me more about the new de-icer.
I have seen the larger cinders picked up by the wind and break windows as was the case a few years back in down town Crowley. But hey when it’s blowing over 100mph things are going to happen.
The deicers are a liquid, often made from beets, that lowers the freezing point of water preventing ice from forming unless it is really really cold. It is applied from a tank mounted in the back of a truck and sprayers on the tail gate. I have seen it used… Read more »
Sounds good. Do you know the temperature at which the de-icer finally freezes? It gets really cold here sometimes. Like 0 degrees when we get the Arctic weather down this far. Driving frozen roads is easier than walking on them.
Ice Bite claims -26 F mixed 50-50 with salt in brine. Salt extender, not replacement. Carbohydrates like beet juice stick to road and help prevent ice bonding if used before freeze. Think salt is good to about zero. High beet extract potassium levels may impact waterways.
A thumbs down for explaining the deicing fluid? Really?
I dunno Dave. Oregon uses a deicer on their roads and it is far better than rock salt and cinders to drive on. I suspect Caltrans had not put the deicer on the road or it would not, in my experience, have frozen over.
+ 1
if caltrans would stop using that deicer the road would not be so slick I was on the road that night and just north of toms place the road was fine when i got to the wreak the road was a sheet of ice I drive 395 all the time… Read more »
I’m sure speeding in a snow storm had nothing to do with it.
