The Eastern Sierra Council of Governments brings together all of our elected bodies – Inyo and Mono Supervisors and towns of Mammoth and Bishop. They do find common issues and sometimes take action.

That council planned to meet today at Bishop City Council chambers starting at 9am. Rick Phelps from High Sierra Energy Foundation will update the group. So will Supervisor Byng Hunt on the Sierra Nevada Conservancy.

Inyo Supervisor Linda Arcularius will handle a review of the council of governments work plan which is up for approval.

Supervisor Viki Magee-Bauer will talk about the Bodie State Park and national monument status. And Bishop Mayor Jeff Griffiths will talk about an annual cooperative meeting with local tribes.

Mammoth Mayor Skip Harvey had planned to talk about the Forest Service film permit process. Harvey had a conflicting activity and told us he would ask for this item to be postponed when he could attend.

Mayor Harvey did say that he believes everyone in the communities realizes the “tremendous benefit to have film crews come here.” Harvey pointed to the invaluable exposure for the Eastern Sierra in films, television productions and commercials. Harvey said he read through the Forest Service regulations on fees and permits for film crews.

Harvey said that he believes the fees need to be fair and equitable and based on actual use of forest lands by the crews and actual cost to the Forest Service. “We need to take advantage of these crews,” said the Mayor, “and show the Eastern Sierra to the world.”

More on that issue at a later meeting.
