So far this summer mosquitoes, plague and West Nile Virus have shown little activity. But Inyo's Environmental Health Department now reports that they received confirmation that a dead bird collected in Inyo has tested positive for West Nile Virus infection.westnile.jpeg

The bird was collected from the downtown Bishop area on August 3rd. This is the first positive indicator of West Nile virus in Inyo and Mono Counties this year.

Mosquitoes carry the virus and can infect birds, horses and humans. So, the obvious concern – to prevent mosquito bites. Health officials highly recommend the use of insect repellent that contains DEET, picaradin or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Make sure your windows have tight-fitting screens and eliminate all sources of standing water that can breed mosquitoes.
