What is the position?

snowmcpherson11.jpgThe Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center is seeking out two contract positions to fulfill the roles of
Lead Avalanche Forecaster and Avalanche Forecaster. The basic duties of the positions are
defined below.
Job Duties (Lead Avalanche Forecaster): Nov. 15, 2015 – Apr. 15, 2016
$3,000-$3,600/mo. DOE @ ¾ time
 Collect and post (via ESAC’s website) field observations required to derive avalanche
advisories
 Publish a minimum of three Snowpack Summaries per week
 Coordinate and manage the Center’s Social Media presence
 Assist with the development of an Operational Plan for Eastern Sierra Avalanche
Center in coordination with the Board of Directors and other appropriate parties as
mutually determined
 Coordinate schedules of observers and additional Center staff; oversee Center daily
operations
 Host of a minimum of three avalanche awareness clinics over the course of the season
 Work closely with the Board of Directors for fundraising and marketing of the Center
 Put effort toward the continued development and support of outreach and interagency
collaboration efforts between major funders and other key local
agencies/organizations
 Develop and deliver a Season End Report for the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center, and
an Executive Summary for the American Avalanche Association by determined due
dates
 Be the face of Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center
Job Duties (Avalanche Forecaster): Dec. 1, 2015 – Mar. 31, 2015
$1,440-$3,000/mo. DOE and ½-¾ time
 Collect and post (via ESAC’s website) field observations required to derive avalanche
advisories
 Publish a minimum of two Snowpack Summaries per week
 Assist with the Center’s Social Media presence
 Assist with a minimum of three avalanche awareness clinics over the course of the
season
 Work closely with the Board of Directors for fundraising and marketing of the Center
 Assist with outreach and inter-agency collaboration efforts between major funders
and other key local agencies/organizations
 Assist in developing necessary reports

Qualified Applicants:
 Have either an AIRE Level 3 or AvPro certification (or equivalent expertise/experience)
 Can commit to duration of 2015-2016 season as defined in the description above
 Must be able to evaluate and travel safely in avalanche terrain
 Be a strong technical writer
 Possess the ability to process and present complex information in written and verbal form
 Have strong presentation skills
 Possess an understanding of Social Media and basic web skills
 Have an understanding of winter use patterns and user groups in the Eastern Sierra

    Wouldn’t it have made more sense for the avalanche center to have posted these job openings in the summer so there would be more time to find qualified candidates, as opposed to in November?
