– Press release from Eastern Sierra Recreation Collaborative

Thanks to all of you for taking the time and making the effort necessary to join forces with folks from the Eastern Sierra and beyond to draft a framework for a Recreation Strategy for use by the United States Forest Service as they draft an updated management plan for the Inyo National Forest.

A spirit of cooperation and open mindedness permeated all four of the ESRC public meetings, and the evidence is apparent in the many common themes and productive ideas that have been documented through the ESRC’s efforts.

What Happens Now

The documentation of last Wednesday’s meeting in Bishop has been completed and is now posted to the ESRC Project Webpage on MLTPA’s website. This includes a photo gallery and a document called the “Draft Framework for a Recreation Strategy”.  Links to both of these items are listed below, along with a link to the ESRC Project Webpage.

What Happens This Week

Download the “Draft Framework for a Recreation Strategy” document and give it a good look.  It is not entirely complete – several of the “Desired Conditions” are not populated with their “Objectives”, “Standards”, and “Guidelines”.  This is simply due to not having had enough time at the meeting last week to get everything done. There also wasn’t time to look at all of the work in its totality, and to determine which of the desired conditions may really be useful to the USFS.  We’ve come up with an answer for that – see “What Happens Next”, below – but for right now, this document should be useful at the USFS meeting happening this Thursday evening on Bishop.  Here’s a link to the official USFS Press Release, and here are the meeting details:

  • What: USFS Open House Informational Meeting
  • When: Thursday, November 20 from 6:00-8:00 PM
  • Where: Tri-County Fairgrounds, Tallman Pavilion, Sierra Street & Fair Drive, Bishop, CA

What Happens Next

Our leadership team – Michael Ward, Danna Stroud, Kristy Williams and myself – has determined that it’s going to take some more work to finalize the current “Draft Framework for a Recreation Strategy” into a final “Recreation Strategy” that best represents the ESRC’s efforts while providing the best document possible for use for the Inyo National Forest Management Plan Revision. We are committed to finding the resources for an additional ESRC meeting and the follow up effort necessary to finalize the work that has been started. Please save this date below and stay tuned for more details:

  • What: January 2015 ESRC Meeting
  • When: Thursday, January 14 from 5:30-8:30 PM
  • Where: Cerro Coso Community College – Bishop, California

That’s it for right now. We look forward to seeing you at the USFS Informational Plan Revision Meeting this Thursday, November 20 starting at 6:00 PM in Bishop and at our next ESRC meeting on January 14, 2015.

Thanks again –

John Wentworth
