Early Wednesday morning a fire destroyed a home in Big Pine.

At about 2:45 am Wednesday the Big Pine Volunteers were called out for what was reported as a fire in a tent on Bartell. Fire Chief John Marzano explained that the fire started near a tent like car cover, but quickly spread to the home.

Marzano describes the fire as fast moving. The chief says that as soon as he saw the fire, he put in a call for additional firefighters and Calfire crews responded as well. Despite the efforts of the firefighters, the home was destroyed. Firefighters remained on scene working to fully extinguish the fire all night, returning to quarters at about 8:30 am.

What caused the fire remains under investigation. None of the residents was hurt, Marzano says, but our local volunteers do have a risky job. Marzano reports that one firefighter did suffer from smoke inhalation.
