ICA press release

INYO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA – The California Arts Council (CAC) has awarded Inyo Council for the Arts (ICA) a Local Impact grant to support ICA’s Community Art Days, taking place this summer across Inyo County.

CAC’s Local Impact Program seeks to provide greater access to the arts for individuals, families and communities by reducing barriers to arts participation and exploring innovative strategies for new or increased participation. Programs funded by Local Impact Grants are especially important in small and rural communities like ours in Inyo County.

The Community Art Days held in June in the County Parks of Lone Pine and Big Pine succeeded in bringing together artists, vendors, volunteers, musicians, and members of the public in an afternoon of fun and celebration of the arts. We are hoping to see even more participation in the upcoming events in Bishop (Sat. Aug. 5th – Bishop City Park – 1:30-8pm) and Independence (Sun. Aug. 6th – Dehy Park – 1:30- 8pm.)

Events will again feature hands-on art activities for all ages, workshops in music and art, local food vendors, and live music throughout the day. These events will close with an evening concert by the Masanga Marimba Ensemble. Masanga’s unique blend of music, performed on Zimbabwean Marimbas, pays homage to musical traditions from around the world – All while remaining fun and family friendly!

The ensemble will also be presenting hands-on workshops in music and dance throughout the afternoon.

ICA, with support from the CAC and the County of Inyo is using the arts and creative expression to reinvigorate community spaces and provide fun and enriching experiences for Inyo County residents and visitors.

ICA is one of just 130 grantees chosen for the California Arts Council’s Local Impact grant program. The news of ICA’s grant was featured as part of a larger announcement from the California Arts Council, which can be viewed online at http://arts.ca.gov/news/pressreleases.php .

A total of 1,076 grantees will receive state grant funding for their work spanning the Arts Council’s 15 unique program categories, benefiting California’s students, veterans, arts educators, at-risk youth, incarcerated individuals, underserved populations, and communities at large. The awards are the largest investment in grants for the Arts Council since the 2002-03 fiscal year.

“Our Council has been honored to lead this year’s state arts grants process, investing so much and reaching so many Californians through the arts and creative expression,” said Council Chair, Donn K. Harris. “To witness [the] exponential return on our state’s investment – the ripple effect in our communities’ health and vitality, is the greatest reward.”
