mcsoNational Peace Officer Memorial Day 2012

On Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at 11:00 am on the lawn in front of the Mono County Courthouse in Bridgeport, the Mono County Sheriff’s Department will hold a “wreath laying” ceremony and presentation in honor of those that have made the ultimate sacrifice of giving their life in the line of duty and recognize the Mono County Sheriff’s Department’s 150th Anniversary and the in line of duty deaths that have occurred throughout the Eastern Sierra including Mono County’s first Sheriff, N.F. Scott, who was shot and killed in 1862. Eastern Sierra Law Enforcement Agencies will be present to honor these fallen officers. While we can never repay the courageous men and women that gave their lives in the line of duty, we can recognize and honor their bravery as part of National Peace Officer Memorial Day.

Peace Officer Memorial Day was introduced on October 1, 1961, when Congress asked President John F. Kennedy to designate May 15 to honor law enforcement officers who had lost their lives in the line of duty. President Kennedy signed this bill into law on October 1, 1962. Now, every year, the president proclaims May 15 as Peace Officer Memorial Day and the calendar week as National Police Week.
