Deadly fire flew down from the Sierra mountains in early July, scorching 35,000 acres in the Sierra above Independence and Big Pine. As a result, fire destroyed the roof of the town reservoir in Independence. Now, Inyo Public Works continues to deal with the Office of Emergency Services for funding to replace the reservoir.
Public Works Director Ron Chegwidden said that his department has submitted the cost of two new 200,000 gallon tanks to the OES. He said that insurance proceeds may help cover the cost too. Chegwidden said the use of tanks instead of an underground reservoir would be the most economical and consistent with health standards.
Currently temporary tanks serve as a reservoir for the small town which is also the Inyo County seat.
