Late last week, a 20-minute pursuit by an Inyo Sheriff’s Deputy ended in the arrest of a Bishop man riding a dirt bike.
According to Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Carma Roper, a deputy was parked on the side of the road on Diaz Lane in Bishop, making a cell phone call. The report says the deputy saw a dirt bike run a stop sign and continue west-bound on Diaz Lane.
The deputy tried to stop the dirt-bike rider who kept going. The deputy chased the man for about 20 minutes and finally stopped him at Red Hill Road west of Bishop.
The officer arrested Anthony Shippentower, 24, of Bishop. At last heard Shippentower remained in jail at Independence under several charges – evading, obstructing a public officer, violation of parole, and driving without a license. His bail was set at $20,000.
The lengthy pursuit involved these agencies – Inyo Sheriff, Bishop Tribal Police, California Highway Patrol and INET.
Local Lady, that is just the problem … people do not think at times!
maybe if this criminal thought about public safety, life & death he wouldnt have ran. We cant have people who have no care or concern for public safety n the streets. Thank god he was arrested and now he has plenty of time to think about public safety in the… Read more »
Why would this young man run? Most “Deputies” would probably warn him, but when you run you DO have something to hide which he did. What if he just robbed YOU and it was not known to law enforcement? You hear about this all the time, sometimes the officer walks… Read more »
I think as Trouble says, it is when it gets dangerous, yes I do believe they should try to apprehend at all possible ends, but they can back off when needed.
how would you feel if the cop let him go?? And then found out he hit someone?! You would still be mad!!
Will, I hope no gets hits becuase the cops were chasing someone for something stupid like running a stop sign. Robbing a bank is a different story.
Still don’t agree with you all. I car chase is a good way for someone to get killed. Very few end nice.
Actually most pursuits do end without injury. You only see or hear about the bad endings. If crooks think they can run and the cops won’t chase them why not go rob a bank? Crooks would know they just have to run a stop sign and the cops will let… Read more »
I don’t agree with everything law enforcement does, umm, but, they are supposed to enforce the law. Running a stop sign is dangerous, as is then running from the law. If the cops didn’t bust these guys why have stop signs or any traffic control? There isn’t anything open to… Read more »
THANK YOU!!! OBVIOUSLY JEREMIAH DOES NOT HAVE CHILDREN OR HE MIGHT BE THINKING ABOUT IT THE SAME WAY. TRUST ME I HAVE BEEN PULLED OVER A FEW TIMES BECAUSE I BROKE THE LAW!!!! COPS, TRAFFIC CONTROL AND LAWS ARE IN PLACE FOR A REASON. NOT SAYING IT’S ALWAYS A FAIR… Read more »
I’ll quit winning. I just wish they would tell it like it is which is there was nothing going on up town so the res shade was looking comfortable and this individual made the officer’s day. I support the local cops to the point that I understand they are meant… Read more »
Maybe so, but the fact remains that the officer said the man broke the law right in front of him. Duty requires response.

Also, I need to point out that the officer that we are discussing was on the reservation taking the phone call about a possible burglary that occured on the reservation. While in process of the phone call, the guy on the motorcycle flew through the stop sign. So, as Benett… Read more »
OK Jeremiah .. I get the system is broke, heard every time. But you’re running the selective thing into the ground, while I get what you’re saying there dude .. It is not as bad as you say, and yes I am on the outside looking in. I get that… Read more »
I ran from the cops once on my dirtbike. They beat the crap out of me, then tossed me in the back seat. There was another guy already in the back seat wearing cuffs. He said “man they beat the crap out of you”. I said “Ya I know”. A… Read more »
We all don’t play by the same rules, Thanks for your account Mark you have made my point!
LOL Mark, guess you did.
Assuming you ran from the cops here in B-Town, that’s why LE is so cool here. They don’t go out of their way to screw your life, they just want to make a point, and keep the public safe. It bums me out when bishop locals are so down on… Read more »
Why are we upset at the officer for doing the job we pay him to do, shouldn’t we as a society be more critical of the person who decided to run. The officers job is not to interpret the laws, that is for the courts, the officers job is to… Read more »
I disagree , in a lot of towns now days , police do not chase down people fleeing for minor reasons to take away the risk to others caused by the chase. So they don’t have people acting like Smokey and the Bandit, and the Blues Brothers.
I do hear what your saying Trouble, don’t get me wrong, I wish some others would see it that way. You want to get them, but then as we have seen in some of the glorified chases on the news, other people end up getting involved and hurt or killed.… Read more »
Good Job guys…. Don’t let anyone get away. Chase them to the ends of the Earth!
The police need to think of public saftey first. If it means this guy gets away , who really cares. A lot of cities only persue fleeing felons. If I remember correctly the Sheriffs stopped chasing the young man they later found deceased in the river not to long ago.… Read more »
Because he broke a law and there could have been an accident that caused great damage.
BK
That part i agree with to some extent Trouble …. nothing wrong with the initial try at stopping him .. but if they fail to stop and it gets unsafe .. back off .. in most cases .. you can’t out run Motorola!
I believe the suspect here is a felon. Im glad they chased him and caught him. Not right when little kids play in that area. Theres a daycare and a ball field right there!!!!!
First off I need to remember the cops are here to help, but in a case like this what did they help? It seems that was the sole purpose was to wait for something so simple like running a stop sign to have something to do. We have all ran… Read more »
I will just point out that the officer witnessed an offense. Where would you have officers draw the line?
Benett
He witnessed a minor infraction and could have hurt some innocent victim also. There is a reason many cities don’t allow police to chase people around public places for minor crimes.
Jeremiah, not everyone runs stop signs as you say, most of us understand the consequences if we do. The cop may have prevented a pedestrian or a cyclist from getting ran over the next time this guy decided to run a stop sign OR prevented this guy from colliding with… Read more »
I am not gonna act like I know how a Cop should act in any situation, But a lot of citations and tickets are to contribute to the state budget and has nothing to do with whether the cop cared about individuals safety or not. Don’t get me wrong I… Read more »
