Tuesday was the first day local political office nomination papers became available. There was no stampede to clerks’ and election offices in either Inyo, Mono or Mammoth Lakes.

In the case of one supervisor seat, an election will fill Bill Reid’s former seat as of June 8th. Bobby Tems of the Walker-Coleville area took out nomination papers to run. Mono County officials had said that the Governor’s office would appoint a new supervisor to fill the vacant seat until the election. The Governor’s office has done nothing since Reid’s death in October. At this point, if the Governor’s appointment office comes to, their appointment will be little more than an afterthought.

In another office, that of Mono County Superintendent of Schools, Catherine Hiatt has withdrawn from the race for family reasons. Hiatt said her husband is suffering from cancer and that her decision is to give him her full attention. Hiatt is supporting candidate Stacy Adler, the former Mammoth Elementary Principal and more recently the Assistant Superintendent of Schools.

As we had reported, a race exists for Mono Superior Judge. Candidates Mark Magit, assistant Mono County Counsel, and long-time attorney and public defender, Randy Gephart will go head to head.

Larry Johnston and Bill Sauser will go for Supervisor District 1 in Mammoth.

In Inyo County, Supervisor District 3 has a possible three-way race so far – Incumbent Bev Brown and potential challengers Karen Summers and Rick Pucci.

Treasurer Alicia McMurtry faces a challenge from Jeff Buss. District Attorney Art Maillet could face a challenge from attorney Gerard Harvey, who said he hopes someone goes up against Maillet.

Incumbent Public Administrator Patricia Barton faces a challenge from Clyde Reyburn.

Two candidates will currently vie for County Clerk-Recorder – Assistant Clerk, Kammi Foote and Recording Technician Della Marie Hannah

The deadlines go like this – petitions in lieu are due February 25th. Declarations of Candidacy forms and nomination papers are due in March 12th unless no incumbent files, then the deadline extends to March 17th.

Mammoth Town Council candidates can start filing now until March 12th. So far these people say they will run to fill the three seats up for election: John Eastman, Rick Wood, Tony Barrett and Matthew Lehman.
