Bad news for peanut butter fans. Inyo-Mono Public Health Officer Dr. Rick Johnson recommends that you do not eat products that contain peanut butter, for now.

Dr. Johnson reports that the Centers for Disease control, California public health officials and the Food and Drug Administration are investigating a multi-state outbreak of human infections caused by Salmonella.

As of a few days ago, 474 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported from 43 states since September, with over 60 cases in California and 5 in Nevada. 107 were hospitalized and infection may have led to 6 deaths.

It’s important to note that to date no major national brand name of peanut butter has been linked to the Salmonella outbreak.

Products that are suspected include frozen Peanut Butter Cookie Dough and King Nut Creamy Peanut Butter. Dr. Johnson says that the list of products that may be affected by Salmonella is still being determined and is incomplete at this time.
