Two search and rescue efforts ended well for the victims involved over the week-end in the Mt. Whitney area. Another search above North Lake continued at last word.

Search and Rescue Coordinator Officer Terry Waterbury said that Saturday in the Mt. Whitney area a boy scout turned his head and his left arm was affected. The wilderness ranger on scene took the boy down. This happened below trail crest.

Between trail crest and trail camp, Waterbury said, 32-year-old Patrick Gallana from Rancho Cucamonga got into trouble with altitude sickness. Inyo Search and Rescue responded but Gallana was already coming down with help from another group of hikers. With some Gatorade, the man was okay.

Still a mystery – what happened to a 21-year-old who went hiking with his father up from North Lake to Piute Pass last Thursday. They were headed to Pine Creek Pass. Waterbury said the father and son became separated at Piute Pass. He said someone may have seen the young man in the Summit Lake area. They said he looked “confused.”

The father returned home to Santa Barbara with two Inyo Search and Rescue teams and air and ground crews from Fresno searching for his son.
