No, leaving Las Vegas via Horizon Air will not fly, contrary to current rumors in Mammoth Lakes. Asked if the Las Vegas rumor were true, Mammoth Town Manager Rob Clark said, “Nope.”
That’s not the end of the story. Horizon Air has decided not to renew flights to Reno next winter. Mammoth Mountain did not subsidize those flights and Horizon officials said they were not working out.
So, in mid-December, Horizon will offer two flights a day to Los Angeles and one flight to San Jose. If United Airlines’ plan works out, they will offer a flight to San Francisco from Mammoth Lakes. The environmental assessment on that for the FAA is in the works.
Rob Clark did say that long-term Mammoth would like to expand to other airports, like Las Vegas. He said that could happen in the future, particularly because Las Vegas is a good connector airport.
The hole in air service pops up in October and early November when Mammoth Mountain does not subsidize flights. However, Mono Supervisors have said they would consider a subsidy to maintain year-round air service for local residents. Clark said this is a low occupancy time for Mammoth, so he said the Town will go back and ask Mono County about help for those months of the year.
