Mono County Assessor candidate, Barry Beck

Mono County Assessor candidate, Barry Beck

Hello Mono County voters:

My name is Barry Beck, and I am running for Mono County Assessor in the June election.   I have worked in the Mono County Assessor’s Office for 11 consecutive years, and I am an advocate for a smaller, more efficient, more user-friendly County government.   I have an Advanced Appraisal certificate, the highest certification that the California State Board of Equalization issues, and I have attended nearly every appraisal/assessment course that the Board of Equalization offers, along with many outside, independent courses.   I have worked on a wide scope of appraisal projects including residential, commercial, and specialty properties, and am fully qualified to make immediate, effective, and positive changes in the operations at the Assessor’s Office.

The Assessor’s Office has sometimes been described as a ‘black eye’ on the face of County services, and I want to change that perception with immediate improvements to customer service, quicker resolution of assessment appeals, fair and equitable assessments, a timely and accurate assessment roll, and improvements to efficiency and workflow in the office.  It is the Assessor’s duty to fairly assess all assessable property in the county, and that is my intent.

I am a very involved community member, and participate with the Mono County Sheriff Search and Rescue Team (an all-volunteer team) as a member of the team, the Board of Directors, and as the Training Officer.  I have served on the Team for 10 years, participating in 179 operations to date.

I am currently serving my second term as Chair of the Bridgeport Valley Regional Planning Advisory Committee (RPAC), on which I have been a contributing member for 4 years.  I coached Mono County Little League baseball for 7 seasons, including a Mono County All-Star team, junior high basketball for 6 seasons, volunteered as a mountain guide for the Wounded Warriors program, and as a volunteer command pilot for Angel Flight (an organization that provides free air transportation for needy ambulatory patients).

I live here in Mono County for the same reasons as many of you; to enjoy the recreational opportunities, to raise my sons in a wholesome and healthy environment, and to revel in the amazing beauty of our Eastern Sierra.  The opportunity to improve the service that the Assessor’s Office provides, to make a difference, is my main motivation to seek this office.
