newsDear Editor:

There is a style of journalism today whose traits are sensational, scandal-seeking, and agenda-driven. An analogy can be drawn between layering a story with cheap shots before moving on to the next flavor of the month, and an inner city gang that drives by and sprays a target with gunfire and then moves on to the next target. Under the guise of “public service,” this type of drive-by journalism uses callous opinionated editorializing instead of guns. It cavorts into groups of people and individuals it doesn’t like and reports wrong and libelous conspiracy theory stuff about them.

This type of journalism relies on defamation, repetitive misstatements, mistaken and misinterpreted news reports to cause excitement and confusion. Then they hop in the convertible, head on down the road and do it all over again, leaving the cleanup of their mess and hysteria for others to correct, properly explain, and interpret. Some are sophomorically unable to keep their witty and potentially destructive opinions on stories to themselves. Who is served by this arrogant turpitude and these personal vendettas?

A standing ovation to the newspapers and news services not interested in lowering their conventions via angst-laden tabloid journalism, thus maintaining a sense of integrity, high community standards of justice, honesty and good morals. The result is a positive experience and spirit of harmonious interest for the reader especially during these precarious and uncertain times. They are a tribute to their profession and a true service to society.
