Mammoth RoadsSpeculation in Mammoth Lakes over the staggering Town debt and local officials takes new twists and turns daily. One of the rumors said Mammoth Lakes Land Acquisition, the holders of the $30 million court judgment, may want to form a citizens’ focus group to work on the settlement. Council members had not heard this and expressed disbelief. We spoke with another citizen, active in public issues in Mammoth.

Dave Harvey said he would “certainly entertain an idea like a focus group to address the issue”, but he said he has not had any formal contact about it. Harvey said he sat on the Airport Commission and invested a lot of time and effort on the issue. He did say that if he were formally asked to sit on a focus group, he would want to participate and help resolve the debt in the best way possible.

Harvey said the combined knowledge of Mammoth stakeholders could conceivably help resolve the situation. Harvey confirmed the deep community-wide concern over this debt. He said he’s not into finger-pointing and that “we, as a community, have to move forward. Until we have a sense of resolution, it affects the whole community – the development community and private citizens.”

Harvey pointed to the pervasive uncertainty in American society right now and said, “We need to get some certainty in our lives.” Councilman Rick Wood said yesterday that he predicts substantive negotiations will start in early July.
