Mammoth man jailed on assault allegations

mlpd_3-23-101.jpgAccording to Mammoth Police Chief Dan Watson, a Mammoth man was arrested recently on allegations of corporal punishment, assault with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment.

When asked about the recent arrest, the Chief said Tyler Flanagan, age 20 and a resident of Mammoth Lakes, was arrested on Saturday, Nov 16 as a result of a police investigation conducted by the Mammoth Lakes Police Department. Earlier that day, Police were informed that Flanagan’s former girlfriend, age 17, alleged that Flanagan had assaulted her the previous evening.

During the assault he allegedly struck her in the head with his fist and pulled hair out of her head. He also allegedly “head butted” her and held her against her will. When officers became aware of the reported crime, they attempted to locate Flanagan and said he subsequently turned himself in at the Police Station.

Flanagan was arrested and booked for the following charges: Corporal punishment/injury to a child, Corporal punishment to a spouse/cohabitant, Assault with a deadly weapon, False imprisonment with violence, Violation of felony probation, and Violation of a protective order with violence. The Chief said that Flanagan was on felony probation and subject to a protective order as a result of a prior domestic violence incident with the same victim.

Flanagan was booked at Mono County Jail.

Yup, damn good snowboarder, what a shame. We’ll see what kind of inmate he’ll make.
I sure do feel bad for everyone else involved, just not for him.
He seems kind of a small dude to be in prison, dang. Some folks just need to learn the hard way I guess.

Remember these are allegations. We are not the judge and jury.

A judge and presumably a jury have already judged him earlier, hence the felony probation.

          Absolutely, innocent until proven guilty.

However I think his aledged crimes represent the Mammoth snowboarder well.

Perhaps MMSA will throw a celibration party for him.

Dingo….My prediction…….no jail time….either a plea bargin,or the ex-girlfriend won’t press charges or refuse to testify….OR the case will just drag on and be forgotten about, kinda like that one up in Mammoth a few years ago, when that surfer-dude assaulted,I forget, that girl…or girls, and got beat-up by bystanders for doing it…..and,it probably won’t effect his “snowboarding career” much either…maybe even making him more popular with his fans and the girls….

While I’m not typically a proponent of statutory rape charges for consenting participants fairly close in age, this appears to be a situation where it might be an appropriate charge. Too bad Flanagan flushed his olympic potential down the toilet, he was quite the upandcomer when he was young.

    • Desert Tortoise November 23, 2013 at 12:40 pm #

With an existing protective order and felony probation, did he even have an Olympic future?

My question is what kind of parents does this kid have to behave that way?

      • Pedro November 23, 2013 at 11:17 pm #

At 20, your behavior reflects on yourself, no matter how good or bad your upbringing.
Redemption is always possible if you’re willing. We all fall short in some way. Olympic accreditation and visas may or may not be impossible, but are just one path.
Most important is making your victims and yourself whole before it is too late and finding your peace in all worlds.

      • Desert Tortoise November 25, 2013 at 7:45 am #

Sorry Pedro but one learns that sort of behavior at home from one’s parents.

        • Pedro November 25, 2013 at 3:41 pm #

Parents aren’t your only teachers even when they do best.
Abusive behavior is often passed generation to generation at home, yes. In my case it was not present in my family, yet I fell into being a bully as a young adult. Luckily I made a decision to change, partly because of my conscience and my upbringing and partly because of others telling me it was unacceptable and I would be held accountable.

Nowadays, one is offered or ordered into treatment usually with these types of charges. If you choose to continue abusive behavior it reflects on yourself. You can choose to learn new behavior, good or bad.

WHERE’S the booking photo…I want to see what a big, tough, woman-beater (allegedly) looks like.

    • Mark November 25, 2013 at 3:22 pm #

While at work they can look like just about anyone. Policeman, Fireman, Teacher, Auto Mechanic, Cashier, Telephone Man, you just never know Big Rick Obrien.

Pretty sure he was on probation for a similar situation with a girl. I’m sure the original article is on here somewhere. I hope mmsa pulls his sponsorship he’s not the right image. Just a punk
