Mammoth Police Improve Seatbelt Use

Proof advertising works? The Mammoth Lakes Police Department put out the word in local media and placed a large digital mlpd_3-23-10message sign on Main St. Officers say they detected a noticeable increase in seatbelt usage in Mammoth after that.

Surveys conducted before the campaign and after showed a marked increased from 87% seatbelt use up to 95%. The effort to raise the profile on enforcement of the hands free cell phone law remained about about 95%. Mammoth Lakes Police have a 100% compliance goal, because of recent studies about the dangers and risks associated with talking on a cell phone and driving.

Officers say they will continue with enforcement of hands free cell phone and seatbelt laws. They say if you are stopped for either of these offenses, expect a citation.
