Budget issues and bears werent the only items on the Mammoth Lakes Town Councils plate at their Nov. 19 meeting.

The evening started with a workshop between Council and the Tourism and Recreation Commission where the Commission introduced the Measure R tool to the Council. The tool will continue to be refined by the Commission and the Measure R Steering Committee until the first award cycle in the spring of 2009.

We will use a small budget in the spring as a practice run, said Commission Chair Bill Sauser. It will be good practice and will help evolve the program.

Tourism and Recreation Director Danna Stroud then gave a 30-minute presentation on what it is that the Tourism and Recreation Department does. She highlighted that the Departments new web site had already received over one million hits in the 2007/08 year, and the new Welcome Center had seen over 110,000 visitors.

With the start of the regular meeting, Council was able to quickly go through the majority of its agenda, excluding John Eastmans latest comments on the Steve Searles situation, and the Towns budget woes.

Public hearings went quickly as Council first approved the closeout of a Community Development Block Grant Planning and Technical Assistance Grants, which was meant for the Tavern Road project that never was. Council then opened and closed the public hearing for the District Zoning Amendment and General Plan Amendment for the Clearwater Specific Plan. The project discussion has once again been rescheduled, this time to Councils Dec. 3 meeting.

Council then approved their comments regarding the North Old Mammoth Road District Special Study, and authorized a submittal of a position paper on Recreation and Tourism to the Desert Mountain Division, League of California.

Lastly, they appointed Mayor Pro Tem Neil McCarroll and Mayor Wendy Sugimura to an Ad Hoc Committee to review the People at One Time calculation, scheduled an interview for Mobility Commission applicant John Vereuck, and approved a resolution taking legislative action regarding impasses existing between the Town and the General Employees Association and Mammoth Lakes Public Works Employees Association in regard to the Towns decision to cancel the employee carpooling program.
