In Mammoth Lakes, officials know that soon bears will wake up and grow active in town. In anticipation of that, the Mammoth BEARS-3Lakes Council Wildlife Committee will meet Wednesday afternoon to talk about wildlife issues.

The agenda includes a review of Wildlife Specialist Steve Searles’ contract. Searles, of course, manages the bear population for the Town. Originally, he handled this work through the police department but now officially functions as a contract worker.

Mammoth Police Chief Dan Watson has once more asked the Forest Service to allow Searles to use his non-lethal firearms on forest land. An update on this issue is on the agenda. Searles has been hampered in his work by the forest service refusal to approve his use of firearms on federal land. The meeting happens Wednesday at 2pm in Suite Z.
