EARLY MORNING SEXUAL BATTERY IN MAMMOTH – MLPD PRESS RELEASE
On Wednesday morning, February 20 at approximately 1:40 am, a 21 year old female resident of Mammoth Lakes and three friends had just left The Tap bar. They separated in the parking lot and the victim began walking southbound on Manzanita towards her residence when she was approached from the rear by a male who grabbed hold of her and grabbed her breasts. She screamed and kicked the suspect who ran away. She walked to her apartment and called the police.
The responding officers identified where the crime occurred and located footprints in the snow. They followed them to a condominium complex on Meridian where they got lost with many other footprints.
The victim was shaken up but not injured. She stated the suspect was of unknown race. He was tall and skinny. He was wearing a black “puffy” jacket with “ribs” on it. His face was covered by the hood on the jacket and she could not tell the suspect’s descent.
The public are reminded to use caution when walking late at night. Whenever possible, it’s best to walk in groups and remain in well lit areas.
Anyone with information about this crime should contact the Mammoth Lakes Police Department at (760) 934-2011.
Nothing good happens after dark in Mammoth.
I won’t be renewing my mvp next season, mammoth is no longer safe. And Mono County is to corrupt to vacation there anymore. Enjoy the crime spree!
Be gone Mark! There’s plenty of good things about this place! We need folks that like coming here and having a good time.
The same could be said of many/most communities, Mark. And the chances are, the community you travel from has a crime rate equal to or higher than that of ML. That aside, ML needs to keep a functional police force 24/7 to help provide a safe environment for its visitors… Read more »
We need cops on the streets 24/7. The city is negligent in cutting MLPD to the current levels. The true amount of crime and incidents like this are not being accurately communicated to the public. Next time you see an MLPD officer ask them what has been going on. I… Read more »
PEPPER SPRAY !
i know this girl, she took your advice big rick & survived the season! much love!
I’m glad to hear the girl was not hurt in the attack. Two things came to mind when I read this story: 1- Even in a small town like ML, females are a target. Don’t walk the streets alone at night. 2- ML needs to maintain a functional police force… Read more »
ferdinand….True…But there lies the problem…..According to a neighbor of mine that,in her younger days and being single back then, and going to the Mammoth Lakes bars (and one in particular),this thing happens all the time to girls….maybe not to this extent, but she says groups of drunken, high on pot “guy-guys”are grabbing… Read more »
vigilante justice, these criminals have to be shown that these kind of chicken*#** acts wont be tolerated by the community,or sit back and watch it get worse
Sorry that this had to happen to this young girl. So scary but just a prime example of reactive vs. proactive policing that is going on in Mammoth now.
Perhaps if there were lights the perpetrate would’ve been more visible. I’ve been saying for years that the town needs to have more lights in that entire neighborhood. I have heard people say that the town does not want to put up more lights b/c of “light pollution.” I personally… Read more »
Where would the money come from to purchase, install, maintain and pay the electric bill for the lights?
Mammoth is broke and in survival mode now.
Your light suggestion is wishful thinking at best.
There have been a number of studies of streetlight-crime correlation, curiously many using data from the UK. (Look it up on Google.) The results are generally not clear-cut, but it seems that lighting may reduce property crime, but not so much crimes like assault. I would prefer dark skies to… Read more »
That neighborhood does not need lights, it needs police presence, esp b/c of the bars and liquor store that are near that neighborhood….who okayed the placement of those businesses near a neighborhood…and now a pot store and nursery too! oh brother… Also, no female should be walking home alone anywhere… Read more »
familtgal…Doesn’t suprise me at all this happened……again…and your right mentioning having a pot store and nursery nearby will only make the area worse….I’d be willing to bet right this minute there are some unemployed pot-heads thinking of a way to be getting into the planned nursery after-hours to make a… Read more »
Since the city and state are mostly broke it becomes your respocibility to light your way and protect yourself. I would suggest a good flashlight and a reliable revolver, in your case a 38 special would be a good choice. You should be able to walk anywhere you like anytime… Read more »
Levi…Problem with that is unless you got a conceal carry permit for the pistol,if stopped, you’d be the one paying a visit to the Bridgeport big-house.And if Mono County is anything like Inyo, you gotta jump through a whole bunch of hoops in order to obtain one.But I agree with you…getting to… Read more »
Levi – I think you’d be surprised at just how solvent the town of Mammoth really is. Rumor has it that a couple of zillionaires could (and would) bail out the town if needed. But the same bozos (elected officials) that were a part of the original airport mess are… Read more »
I remember when the only thing we had to worry about walking through the Ghetto at night were dogs that enjoyed barking and chasing people.
good for her for putting up a good fight…I wish the cops could’ve found him, we don’t need this kind of crap going on in Mammoth…It’s a pretty damn safe place to live!
Great job by the victim to fight back! Do not go quietly like a sheeple.
