Mark Felton led the men and women who protected and served the Independence community.

Independence’s long time and faithful Fire Chief Mark Felton has died.  Felton had become ill in recent days and was reportedly flown out to a hospital in Reno.  He apparently passed away in the hospital on Tuesday.

Owens Valley Mortuary in Lone Pine expects to have more information in a day or two.  Felton lived in Independence for many years with his wife Peggy and children Claude and Aldene.  He served as the leader of the volunteer fire department and ambulance crew for 30 years or more.  His quiet, balanced style gave support and confidence to his crew and to community members who relied on him for so man years. He had retired as chief in very recent times.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Mr. Felton’s family and friends for this loss at holiday time.
