monosarSearch and Rescue Team Operation: Missing Person (press release)

At dusk, on the afternoon of Thursday, April 24th, 2014, at approximately 6:05 pm, Mono County Sheriff’s Dispatch received a call regarding a potential missing person outside the Town of Mammoth Lakes, around SR 203 and Hwy 395.

The Mono County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SAR) team, with the assistance of Mono County Sheriff’s Deputies, were dispatched to mile marker 27 on the southbound side of Hwy 395. The reporting party stated that at approximately 1 mile north of SR 203, on Hwy 395, the subject left his family and walked into the forest west of the highway. The subject had a pre-existing medical condition and a lack of proper clothing for the expected cold night temperatures. The SAR team began tracking the subject’s footprints when he called a family member and reported he had come back to the highway and hitchhiked to Lone Pine. His family safely met him in Lone Pine.
