A spokesman for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has confirmed that his office plans to appoint a replacement to fill the void left by the passing of Mono Supervisor Bill Reid in October.

govsWhen a supervisor dies, or leaves the job, the Governors office has the ability to appoint a replacement or put the replacement of the supervisor up to the voters with an election. When Mono District Four Supervisor John Cecil passed away in 2006, the governor chose to send the question of a replacement to an election.

At the recent Eastern Sierra Council of Governments meeting, Mono Supervisor Byng Hunt said that he and other supervisors had received calls from the Governors Office indicating that the governor might appoint. A representative from the Governors Office has also come to the area to talk to people about what was needed in Mono County.

Inyo Supervisor Linda Arcularius, who serves on the Council of Governments, was appointed to her first term as supervisor before being elected and re-elected to handle the job. Having been through the appointment process, she says that she was surprised at the thoroughness, of the process.

Today, a spokesman explained that the governor is currently reviewing applicants to appoint a replacement. The spokesman would not comment on who was being considered for the job, but he did confirm that the governor plans to appoint rather than elect. There is no timeline on when this appointment might occur.
