Inyo, Mono and San Bernardino Counties make up new Congressional District 8.

California voters approved measures that created a citizens redistricting committee.  Members of the public, not elected officials, have come up with new political lines, including congressional districts.  The new District 8 includes Inyo, Mono and San Bernardino counties.  Now the big question is who will represent us?

There was speculation that Congressman Jerry Lewis might run in District 8.  Word has now surfaced that Lewis likely retire from public office.  Spokesmen at Congressman Buck McKeon’s office claimed that he doesn’t know about the future and which district he might run for. There are no incumbents within the borders of District 8. McKeon currently represents Inyo and Mono and other parts of the state.

According to a website, wedrawthelines.ca.gov, the new districts are scheduled to take effect for the June 2012 primary elections. The districts were formed to create population equality with roughly 702,905 people in each of the 53 districts. Sources do say that legal challenges to the congressional district lines may be filed in federal court.  There may also be voter challenges to the state senate redistricting.  It’s all a bit confusing.

But what is known is that if you want to run for Congress, you can file right here in the Eastern Sierra at your county elections department. News has surfaced that a conservative Republican from Lake Arrowhead, Gregg Imus, plans to run in District 8. There have been some locally who have expressed interest in the congressional seat but have not yet filed.
