Morgan Freeman brings his classic personna to "Oblivion".

Movie Director Joseph Kosinski, best known for “Tron: Legacy”, has a new science fiction movie in the works.  His film “Oblivion” will star Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman and Melissa Leo.  The movie’s publicist confirmed local reports that the crew will film in Mono County this summer.

In fact, the Mono County Tourism and Film Commission planned to talk about that at Wednesday’s meeting in Lee Vining.  Details on exact locations of the shoots in Mono County are still under consideration. Sources tell us June Lake is highly favored.

Claire Raskind, publicist for the film, did confirm to Sierra Wave Media that “Oblivion” will film in our region this summer.  Raskind is currently in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on a shoot for the movie.  Beyond that, Raskind said she could not comment.

Locally, sources close to the situation did say that a fairly large production crew would set up in June Lake.  We understand that crews have already made room reservations and have worked on preliminary set-ups in the area.

The story line of the movie, “Oblivion” involves the destruction of Earth and a society that moves to the clouds.  Cruise will play a soldier who is stuck alone on the planet, repairing the drones that patrol and destroy a savage alien life form.  He encounters a beautiful woman who crashes in a craft and, according to film buffs, their experience together forces him to question his world view.

Disney originally bought the story, but worked a deal with Director Kosinski. According to some reports, the film crew will head to Iceland for a shoot before coming to the Eastern Sierra.  The release date of “Oblivion” has been reported as late April, 2013.
