AAA staff reports that statewide gas prices have hit an all time record high. Usually prices peak during the summer months, especially around Memorial Day, but this year has already surpassed the record high set last year.

According to a AAA press release, the average price for a gallon of regular in California is now at $3.50, up 38 cents in the last three weeks. This is already 58 cents higher than the price of a gallon last year at this time.

When the statewide average peaked on May 9th last year, a gallon of regular went for $3.49.

In the Owens Valley gas is running between $3.40 and about $3.60 right now. In Mammoth gas prices are higher than ever, and approaching the $4.00 mark. A gallon of regular ranges from $3.93 to $3.95 in Mammoth now. Super, has already crossed the threshold usually reserved for Bridgeport.

The usual reasons for the high price of gasoline are cited, including the high price of crude oil which has recently been hovering over $100 a barrel.

Its still only the first week of March. Gas prices usually peak around Memorial Day. AAA spokesperson Sean Comey says that, its particularly troubling from the consumers perspective that this is happening this time of the year when we often see prices that are relatively low. He added, we may have not seen the worst of it yet.
