In the month of October, the Salvation Army that serves Inyo and Mono saw a nearly 40% increase of those in need. The organization provided food and other services to 1256 people in October in the Bishop area alone. This portends a lean Christmas for many in our two counties.

We checked in at Salvation Army headquarters where food and clothing await those in need. Special Christmas food boxes will go out to families and individuals this year. Rob Lawler, who heads up the Salvation Army in the Eastern Sierra said he has seen many new people come in for help. families are being impacted by the economy, he said.

The Salvation Army will provide Christmas food boxes for those who sign up or ask. The group also continues to provide help with utility bills, rent, gas vouchers, prescriptions and other medical needs.

All donations stay here in the Eastern Sierra to help those in need locally. Lawler said that the kettle collections now underway in Mammoth Lakes, Bishop and Lone Pine will go a long way to fund programs. He also said that volunteers or paid workers are needed to operate the kettles and bells. Lawler suggested that local clubs might like to get involved.
