Ski Area Officials report the tragic death of Mammoth Ski Instructor Charles Wootton.

Laura Johnson with the Ski Area writes, that at about 1:15 pm on Thursday, the ski patrol responded to a call on the upper section of the Carousel Trail. Witnesses reported that Wootton lost control while skiing the boardercross features and hit a tree. Johnson says that Wootton was immediately taken to Mammoth Hospital where, sadly, he passed away.

Johnson reports that Wootton was teaching a class at the time, but none of the students saw the accident.

Mammoth Mountain CEO Rusty Gregory was quoted as saying, "We are all grieving the loss of our team member Charles Wootton. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and co-workers in this difficult time."

Wootton was 47 years old
