Suspicious Incident
On Tuesday April 29th at about 5:30 pm, a report was made to the Mammoth Lakes Police Department regarding a male who attempted to get a young girl into his car. The 11 year old female said she was walking home from the library on Meridian Blvd at about 4:40 in the afternoon, when a man stopped his car and told her that her uncle wanted him to pick her up. When the girl raised her cell phone to call her uncle, the vehicle drove away. Her uncle was the reporting party and denied telling anyone to pick up the child.
The suspect appeared to be the only occupant in the vehicle and never got out or touched the victim.
The suspect was described as a white, male, adult, mid 20’s, clean shaven, wearing large-framed dark sunglasses, a black beanie and a black or dark colored hoodie.
The vehicle was described as a black mini-SUV similar to a Subaru or Honda CRV, newer and clean looking with tinted windows and bearing Nevada license plates.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Mammoth Lakes Police Department at (760) 934-2011 or after hours at (760) 932-7549.
facts are facts, take a look at the crimes happening recently, crazy stuff, mostly drug related, very unsafe, and just the start if it continues, just like everywhere else
Ferdinand…This one here really crosses the line as far as young girls not being safe or unsupervised….From what my neighbor says, having lived up there for a few years, the bad behavior towards girls is usually reserved for the 21 and up that happen to be leaving the bars and taverns after… Read more »
its possible that mammoth is no longer safe for young girls to walk unsupervised,i know in most places in L.A. it would be unheard of,from mayberry to watts
Sugar magnolia. Are you sure you’re not confusing MCSO with CHP I haven’t seen any sheriff officers hiding in bushes
Either or, CHP or Mono Sheriff, what security is the public receiving from that? Why should that be acceptable? along with the fact Police forces protect a system that bail’s out billionaires and foreclose house’s on the public they are meant to serve, this system/society breed’s deprivation, which breeds crime!… Read more »
yes craig, I know the difference between CHP and Mono County Sheriffs. You must not drive between Mammoth and Bishop much, they are out there pretty much every day. Personally, I think we have more CHP here per capita than anywhere else in California, we should be able to leave… Read more »
I see Mono county sheriff vehicles hiding behind bushes on 395 all the time, and they pull cars over in mammoth. Why aren’t they out there patrolling our Mono County communities instead of hiding behind bushes? They have a pretty large area to patrol, I’ve never understood how they have… Read more »
Im glad she is ok and apparantly used a great bit of intelligence by the use of her phone! However, one thing in this story concerns me! How did the suspect know she was staying with or knew she had an uncle in the area! Either he knows her or… Read more »
1). Local crime rates are down significantly overall in the past 18 months or so. 2). None of the crimes you described would have been prevented by additional patrol staff. And in the case of the assault; a member of the police force (WCO) was actually directly accosted by the… Read more »
Bemused – I was a patrol cop for 10 years, a reserve for 3 years before that, and a jailer. Your opinions about the impact of patrol cops and what their presence on the street does is flat our wrong. Crime stats are down because less arrests are being made.… Read more »

I believe what you’re saying as it applies to street crime in urban/suburban (sprawling) environments replete with loitering, gangs, extensive truancy, homelessness, etc.
However, in a tiny isolated hamlet with next to zero street crime already (e.g. Mammoth), it’s clearly a very different scenario…
Wow, I’m impressed. That little girl is SHARP! Not only did she call her uncle to confirm but she got a pretty darn good description of the creep. Somebody taught that girl well.
Bank robberies, whack jobs assaulting women in broad daylight on Main street, and now attempted child abduction from an out of state vehicle/person after school. Mammoth is becoming a destination all right… for dirt bags. Dear TOML – When can we get some reasonable patrol staffing back?? Does someone have… Read more »
