On the local election scene, some news from the Town of Mammoth Lakes. Two seats are up for grabs on the Council. Those held by Mayor Skip Harvey and Kirk Stapp.

So far, two potential candidates have taken out nomination papers. Don McPherson and Jo Bacon.

McPherson has taken strong positions on several community issues – primary among them, the major oversight of town officials to provide adequate parking in the Village area.
McPherson and his wife Jan have lived in Mammoth Lakes for several years, supportive of local organizations and improvement efforts. McPherson, also a veteran, has vocally supported the timely display of the American flag in Mammoth Lakes.

Jo Bacon currently sits on the Town of Mammoth Lakes Planning Commission. She ran for Town Council in the last election and did not win. She too has lived in the area for several years and is involved in community groups and improvement efforts.

The filing deadline for nomination papers is March 7th unless one of the incumbents does not file. In that case, the deadline extends to March 12th.

As for the incumbents, Mayor Skip Harvey said he still does not yet know whether he will seek re-election.

We have placed calls to Councilman Kirk Stapp but do not yet know whether he will seek re-election. Community members have noted that Stapp’s wife Alice has been ill in recent days, pre-occupying the councilman’s energy.
