state_capitol_1-12-09In January of 2011, Mono County voters will be asked to choose a new representative to the California State Senate. State Senator Dave Cox passed away in July leaving an empty seat in the First Senate District, which includes Mono County.

The election scene is now starting to take shape. On Monday, Assemblyman Roger Niello threw his hat into the ring, declaring that he plans to run for the State Senate seat. Assemblyman Ted Gaines, has also said that he plans to run.

Niello, a Republican who represents the people of Fair Oaks, near Sacramento, has served in the State Assembly since 2004. He is also a business owner and has been the president of the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. Niello is endorsed by Senator Coxs wife Maggie.

Republican Assemblyman Ted Gaines currently represents the people of Alpine, Placer, El Dorado and Sacramento Counties.

With two Republicans running for the seat so far, voters are set to get the chance to choose one of the candidates in the primary election set for November. The special election is set to be held on January 4th.
