After a standoff in Death Valley Thursday night, officers arrested a fugitive listed as armed and dangerous.
According to Inyo County Deputy Doug Richards, we received word from Las Vegas Metro that a potentially armed and dangerous man was headed our way. Richards reports that safety of the visitors to Death Valley and the officers was a concern as Inyo County Sheriffs Deputies teamed up with the Park Service and CHP to find and arrest the man, 48 year old John Louis Chalaye. A CHP helicopter was also brought in to look for the man.
The suspects vehicle was spotted on the popular Artists Drive in Death Valley National Park, and a standoff between the suspect and law enforcement began. Officers report that it was several hours of negotiation and talking before Chalaye submitted without incident.
Under Sheriff Jim Jones called the arrest a remarkable effort from all law enforcement agencies, saying that, the end result, the arrest of an extremely dangerous person without incident, exemplifies the unified mission.
Chalaye is currently being held at the Inyo County Jail on a fugitive arrest. The warrant with charges out of Clark County is pending.
